Stitch Therapy

Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Long Lost Blogger

Hi Friends! Long time no talk!

Honestly, I’m not sure where to go with this blog. I love having a place to ramble on and record our family memories, but as the boys get older, it seems less OK to share their antics online. The things that I might find adorable as their Mother may seem mortifying to them as a tween and teen. Gah! Parenting is tricky. I guess I’ll just start writing and see how things evolve.

Anyhoo… Where did the last year and a half go? In that time, I have:

1. Barely been stitching (but have been feeling a bit of an itch to get started again)

I finally framed this…

and started this…

2. Moved into a new house (which we LOVE but required a change of schools which was HARD)

We have more space and a lot to garden, which is good and bad…

Tom’s favorite part is the long driveway which means he never has to talk to neighbors. My favorite part is the back patio and gazebo.

3. Got MARRIED (Yes, Tom finally made an honest woman of me after all of these years)!

I love him.

Family Forever.

4. And Charlie is great (I know you must be wondering).

How are you? What’s new? How’s life? Have you been stitching? Did you miss me? I missed you! It’s good to be back!

Around here

It has been so long since the last post! In the last 9 days…

I accidentally flushed my fitbit down the toilet. I know, how does that kind of thing even happen? But it happened. Is it even worth it to move now that I don’t get credit for it? #lazygirlproblems

I’ve been commuting a lot to NYC which means train time to cross stitch.

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.46.33 AM.png

Making progress and feeling reinvigorated now that I’ve gotten past the lady! Can you see the man emerging with his little top hat and bobbed hair? Haha. What a looker!

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.22.42 AM.png

I’ve been having tummy troubles (for years) and have not had much success with doctors on the matter. Recently, I decided to give gluten-free a try to see if it helps. So far, it has! But it’s too early to know if it’s just coincidence or the real deal. (And, yes… the painful irony that I finally baked a good loaf of bread!)

I’ve been eating lots of zoodles…

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.31.17 AM.png

And Asian dishes…

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.33.07 AM.png

And we are loving gluten free chocolate chip cookies! Rice flour is my new best friend!

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.33.58 AM.png

We enjoyed some fishing…

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.35.00 AM.png

And Biggest earned his Arrow of Light award in Scouts. I’m proud of him for sticking with it considering he’s wanted to quit a bajillion times over the years. (And I’m beyond THRILLED to be ending my illustrious tenure as a Scout leader!)

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.37.42 AM.png

Awful lighting, no makeup, rambunctious kids, and lazy cat… This is pretty much sums up life around here. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.50.28 AM.png

What’s new in your world???

Weekend Report

Hello Friends!

I hope that all of you had a great Mother’s Day! Before Biggest was born, I had a few miscarriages and it took what felt like a long time to become a Mom. Mother’s Day would sometimes be a sad day back then, so I feel especially thankful and blessed now to wake up to this:

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 10.46.12 AM.png

I must’ve done something very nice in a past life to deserve these three.

So far, 44 is turning out pretty good! My birthday goal of baking a great loaf of bread finally came true on Saturday! The crazy part is that I used the same recipe that I have tried many times before unsuccessfully. Go figure.

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 9.14.06 AM.png

The rain finally stopped and the weekend was sunshine-y and warm. Of course that meant we had to rollerblade (insert eye roll). It was actually more like: Littlest rollerbladed while I parked my butt on the playground, stranded because my shoes were in the car and I couldn’t bear the thought of rollerblading all the way back to get them.

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 9.21.29 AM.png

Last night was our final dance class. Our teacher wanted us to pose for pictures for her Facebook page. Clearly we were her star pupils! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA (Not!)

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 9.24.15 AM.png

So, I’m finally making some stitching progress. Right side- here I come! Sorry for the terrible pictures.

What’s new with you? Have a great week!

Spring Breakin’

tap… tap… tap…  Is this thing on?

Hi strangers! It has been awhile! How are you?

Spring Break has come and gone. The weather was warm and glorious. I like to take walks and pick up weird specimens to draw. This is from a “Princess Tree”. Thanks Internets for the ID!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.17.40 PM

Check out this cool branch formation. Nature is so symmetrical!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.18.05 PM

I thought I had hit the thrift store jackpot on a Q-snap frame. Too bad I didn’t read the package carefully because… hello

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.21.14 PM.png

It is the size of a table! And made for quilts! Ugh.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.23.10 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.24.50 PM.png

Littlest sculpted this. I think the resemblance is uncanny.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.25.31 PM.png

Look at these cute rolls I made!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.27.37 PM.png

Tom tried to walk Charlie on a leash.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.29.18 PM

They didn’t make it very far.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.30.00 PM

I stitched a little. Le sigh. Same ol’ skirt.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.31.10 PM.png

Littlest wanted to stitch too, which made me insanely happy.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.31.53 PM.png

Cute… Cuter… Cutest!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.33.25 PM.png

We built a volcano.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.35.33 PM

Because what else do you do when you’re bored and want to make a giant mess?

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.41.00 PM.png

But it wasn’t all fun and games around here. We tried to instill a good work ethic in the boys by offering them money to clean up sticks in the yard.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.38.31 PM

That lasted about 20 minutes until I looked out the window and saw them doing this instead.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.38.58 PM

That about catches you up. Happy Spring!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.43.41 PM.png

The Grumps

I have been in the worst sort of mood lately. It doesn’t help that work is stressful, we have a million +1 obligations in the evenings and weekends, and I haven’t had much time at home. We introverts really need our down time at home. Am I right?

Today, especially, I need to remember the things for which I am thankful:

Biggest wanted to buy a crystal mining set with his own money. He spent all evening mining for crystals and would carefully wash each one that he found before showing it to us. Do you see Littlest in the background?

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 10.07.27 AM.png

He is soooo excited for roller hockey. He got his new helmet and wore it around all weekend.

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 10.09.31 AM.png

He wanted to practice roller blading before the big player assessment on Sunday. I didn’t realize that 1. there are still roller rinks around and 2. they’d be so crowded! It ended up being a ton of fun. Here I am showing off my stuff!

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 10.12.15 AM.png

Here is Littlest at the assessment. Doesn’t he look so official? My little BABY!!!

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 10.36.41 AM.png

The weather was gorgeous all weekend and perfect for outdoor activities.

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 10.16.16 AM

I love when something as simple as catching minnows can entertain the boys for a whole afternoon.

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 10.18.31 AM

Being outside does me a ton of good too. There’s just something about the sound of water rippling and the feeling of the sun sparkling from up above. It’s good for the soul.

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 10.38.25 AM.png

Tom and I went to a christening.

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 10.22.39 AM.png

And last night we learned the Foxtrot!

The End.

Winter Home

Hi Blog!

It is sooooo cold out these days. It takes a lot of brain power and energy to keep everyone entertained on these long cooped-up Winter weekends.

I experimented with making Quinoa cookies.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.48.49 PM.png

There was a blind taste test to see if they could pick out the secret ingredient. Littlest guessed, “pepper.” Biggest guessed, “I have no idea, but did you bake any regular chocolate chip cookies?” Tom guessed, “A little weird, but I’ll still eat them.”

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 1.17.49 PM.png

We drew fake animal wounds on arms with liquid eyeliner and other old makeup from my drawer  (and then posed for pictures).

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.51.51 PM.png

I talked Littlest in having a sketching session with me, partially to force myself to draw too.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.53.22 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.55.01 PM

My copy of Down to Earth finally came and I read it from cover to cover. Le sigh… I want to run away from suburbia and raise chickens on a farm, except I don’t really like chickens and I suck at gardening.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.56.22 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.57.20 PM.png

Oh to be Charlie for a day…

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.58.17 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.59.25 PM.png

We had some nice quiet moments, petting animals…

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 1.00.42 PM.png

And cross stitching.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 1.01.40 PM.png

And some rowdy ones.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 1.03.18 PM

I love my little family.

Super Bowl and Super Babies!

In summary, we had a very social weekend and then I got sick. Boo.

But let’s rewind.

On Friday, my Biggest boy turned 11 years old. He was born the day before the Eagles played in the Super Bowl. I could care less about football, but if you live in Philadelphia, it was a big deal. All the babies in the nursery were dressed in Eagles green onesies and hats.  I am known for growing gigantuan babies, so my guy looked like a linebacker next to all of the other petite babies. I have to admit, he was pretty cute.

And now he’s 11! Unbelievable.

All of the family came over on Friday and we had a taco feast (his request). Per tradition, I was unable to take a decent photo to document the event.

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 9.36.45 AM.png

On Saturday, he had a sleepover party with his little buddies. They are getting to that age now where they just “hang out.” It seems so boring. I’m constantly like “don’t you want to play a game?” “Don’t you want to do an activity?” “Should we have silly string battle now?” I know I’m being an uncool mom, but that’s my job.

On Sunday, I started to feel really run down and sick, but there were things to do!

Like trying a new dish detergent recipe…

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 9.51.20 AM.png

And making split pea soup (in our house, we call it “Ham” soup because, god forbid, they realize that they are eating peas!) and a big pot of spaghetti sauce for the week…

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 9.50.50 AM.png

Then we worked on our state project on Alabama. How do you think he really feels about working on his state project?

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 9.51.06 AM.png

As the day progressed, my cold got worse and worse. By the time the Super Bowl came on, I was a tired snotty mess, so while everyone else was partying with beer and wings, I had NyQuil and was tucked into bed before the half time show came on. Thumbs up!

Happy Tuesday!

Crazy Cat Lady

Hi Blog!

I’ve been trying to post more on Instagram so if you follow me there, some of these pics are a repeat, so sorry! I can’t wrap my head around what to post where. #oldladyproblems

I’m not quite recovered from traveling and am still getting up in the wee hours of the morning. It’s annoying to be falling asleep by 8pm, but I do enjoy those quiet early morning hours alone in the kitchen.

On Saturday, I made Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup), which is a favorite for Tom and Biggest. The recipe starts with grinding and roasting spices which is such a satisfying task.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 1.43.25 PM.png

The only problem is that the spices smell so good as they are roasting that it makes me hungry and, at that point, the broth is still many hours from being finished. It’s a process.

By mid morning, the boys were going a little stir crazy, so we decided to venture out in search of a sledding hill that still had some snow, not an easy feat! The hill at the school was a slushy muddy mess. Then Biggest suggested that we try the seminary near our house. It was still pristine and snowy! I guess the seminary folks aren’t big on sledding.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 1.50.29 PM.png

Sunday was chore day. I’m pretty much a weirdo who enjoys doing things like cleaning out the Tupperware cabinet and lining up the canned goods in the pantry. So satisfying. Anyone else with me on that one? Please tell me I’m not alone.

Charlie kept climbing into my shopping bags as I was trying to fill them with decluttered junk. It would have been really annoying if he wasn’t the cutest cat on Earth.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 2.01.36 PM.png

Speaking of cute cats, I have been addicted to an app called Neko Atsume. It’s a game where you try to attract cats to your yard by leaving out toys and beds and food. Then you can take pictures of them and buy more stuff for them. Basically, it’s pointless, but I am obsessed.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 2.04.13 PM.png

OMG! Aren’t you dying at how cute the cats are? I keep texting pics of my screen to Tom and Stephanie. I know that they are rolling their eyes at me, but they humor me because they are the BEST! Evolution to crazy cat lady… LEVEL: COMPLETE.

And finally, Pinewood Derby time! Biggest won “Best in Show”. Yay!

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 1.57.41 PM.png

How was your weekend? Can you believe it’s FEBRUARY?!!

Cupcakes, Cats, & Cross stitch

Hi Blog.

I leave for Paris tomorrow. I realize it’s totally obnoxious to say, but I am dreading this trip big time. I get very anxious about traveling and being away from my family. It’s the worst.

We had such a great few days though. I will write a post and read it when I am homesick.

I have been keeping up with the Couch to 5K training, even though it’s not quite as fun anymore. On Saturday, the boys wanted to go to the playground, so I ran around the school while they played. It is much harder to run outside vs. on a treadmill!

Littlest practiced skateboarding while I ran. He has been determined to get good enough to go to the skatepark with the older kids. I admire his determination!

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.25.57 AM.png

It was a busy few days with indoor soccer and playdates and work. We were happy to stay home for a game night. Bingo!

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.43.14 AM.png

Of course, you know who got into the action.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.44.02 AM.png

In other news, we finally got our first little bit of snow!

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.45.12 AM

Littlest got a snowboard for Christmas. He is dying to use it and has been trying all kinds of tricks to make it snow; including the snow dance (point your forefingers up like you’re saying #1 and dance), sleeping with a spoon under your pillow, and putting your clothes in the bathtub at night. Unfortunately, the snow wasn’t enough for actual snow boarding but the forecast is calling for a possible blizzard this weekend. His techniques may be working!

The boys have really been into that show “Cupcake Wars” on Netflix. On Monday we decided to have our own Cupcake War. I baked up a batch of cupcakes and they worked to develop flavors and decoration.

It was so much fun and I couldn’t believe how focused and creative they were.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.49.13 AM

We had flavors such as S’mores, Peanut Butter & Banana, Apple & Maple, and Tropical Coconut.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.50.19 AM

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.50.46 AM

I thought that the results were quite beautiful.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.53.57 AM.png

Biggest’s work:

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.54.40 AM

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.52.34 AM

And Littlest’s:

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.55.41 AM

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.53.13 AM

Of course, they deserted me when it was time to clean up the kitchen (but it was worth it).

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.57.03 AM.png

After the exhausting Cupcake Wars, we enjoyed some down time on the couch watching YouTube videos and cross stitching. I just noticed that we were watching cat videos while our cat was watching us!

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.58.14 AM

Someday I will learn to take better photos, but that someday isn’t today.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.59.41 AM

Happy Wednesday, Friends!

Hi Blog.

Today I found 2 grey hairs. They seem to be appearing with greater frequency. Is this the beginning of the end? Is 2016 the year? Sigh.

Life is going by so fast.  Yesterday I paid bills, and did expense reports, and filed old papers… those boring jobs that usually get put off week after week, month after month, until you realize that 6 months has passed, then a year.

I am going to Paris at the end of this month for work. It will be whirlwind as usual, but maybe I’ll get to wave to the Eiffel Tower when we drive past in a car. Last time, the driver was kind enough to slow down so I could take a blurry picture out the window, but I’m sure that he rolled his eyes at me and thought “annoying person”.

Tonight is the big Powerball lottery. We’ve never played before but it’s hard to resist taking a chance when the jackpot is for a bajillion dollars. We had a hilarious discussion at dinner the other night about what we would do if we won. Littlest said that he’d get a different limo for each day of the week. The Friday limo would have a hot tub in it and he’d invite his friends to ride around with him. I said that if he and his friends were riding around in the Friday limo, then I’d probably want to be in the Wednesday limo with my stitching and Charlie even if it was on a Friday. Biggest said that he’d put some money away for college and buy a penthouse next to Central Park. Tom and I agreed that we’d take everyone on a long vacation, then buy a little farm house and live a quiet life. Tom would probably still wear his 20 year old raggedy “Life is Good” tshirt and I’m OK with that. It doesn’t take too much to make us happy.
