Discovering me … one stitch at a time

In the fog

Dear Blog,

Summer is officially here.

We started it off with a bang with Littlest graduating from Elementary School,

going fishing,

playing mini golf, cooking out, relaxing in the yard,

and I got a haircut!

Last Sunday, we celebrated Father’s Day. Littlest worked hard on a portrait of Coal for Tom. I am quite impressed with his thick and thin linework. So expressive!

We also baked this cake which was SUPPOSED to be a spongecake, but it didn’t rise so we called it a shortbread, but then it was very dry so we decided it was biscotti. Ha! It’s all in the marketing.

Besides all of the happy moments, we are having some big sadness right now with a very sick family member. Tom went down to do some work on the beach house this morning and sent me this photo from the foggy pier.

It reminded me of this TNH quote.

Keep the faith, friends.

Around here…

Tom and I have been taking turns being sick.

The two older guys (Tom and Biggest) went to the beach house to go crabbing. Biggest caught 2 blue crabs and proudly cooked them.

Littlest and I went to the roller rink (old pic from last Summer, also known as my roller queen days)

And prepared a fondue feast for Tom and Biggest’s return home.

Sunday was cold and rainy, so…

I baked Pesto bread (which got weirdly tall), but tasted delicious.

Tom hung our new (old) lucky horseshoes above the doors.

Littlest sat at the top of the stairs creating comic book characters.

Biggest disappeared into his room (Preteen! No photos!)

Sammy did what Sammy does best.

Coal celebrated his 15th birthday!

Charlie hung out in a box.

What did you do this weekend?

Down to Earth

This was a pretty eventful week!

First, my kitchen was featured on Rhonda Hetzel’s blog, Down to Earth, as part of her My Favorite Places series. I am such a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of Rhonda’s blog and books. She inspires me every day to live a more simple, authentic lifestyle. Love her!

Then, I spent two days with this woman…

Fergie! She was amazingly down to earth, thoughtful, and friendly.

But just so you don’t go thinking that life around here is all about hob-nobbing with royals and famous bloggers, this week I also…

Watched Charlie watching Tom practice guitar:

Such a fuzzy photo, but I love that Charlie is speaking his mind, music critic that he is.

Found a fake pumpkin with fake barf that some practical joker left in the kitchen:

Felt warm and fuzzy catching a kid reading. Tom is clearly exasperated by the dramatic turn of events in Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Homework! Homework! Homework! What is up with 5th grade math?!!

Cross stitched:  I know (snore).

If you think it’s boring reading about the slow progress on this project, imagine how boring it is to be the one stitching it.

Hope that you had a great week! Happy Friday!

Hi Blog!

It is rainy and cold here this week, a bit strange for the beginning of June. Biggest is disappointed because his class trip to the lake was canceled. I secretly am enjoying this weather anomaly. It feels cozy to be stuck inside when it’s rainy outside.

We had a nice weekend. It included a sushi date (mmmm) and a lot of kitchen/cooking time for me. It doesn’t get any better than that. Well, it does, but I’m trying to be a thankful/positive person.

Lately my mind has been on simplifying. I want a simple life and I don’t mean that fake curated perfect looking simplicity that you see on blogs and in magazines. I want true simplicity; to live modestly, cook our own foods, and make do with what we have. It’s a constant struggle between this want vs. our current situation.

We have a busy life in a busy suburb with busy kids and busy careers. I suppose there is a time and season for everything and some day things will be slower and simpler for us. In the meantime, I try to do what I can to bring pockets of simplicity into our world. Some people think I’m a weirdo for baking bread or making bugspray or insisting that things be made from scratch when I’m already up to my eyeballs in chores, but it makes me feel better, like I am taking baby steps towards something. Ya know?

Did you miss me?! That was a really long break.

Our trip was fun, but action-packed. After 9 days away, it feels great to be back in our cozy house. Sign me up for Homebodies Anonymous.

Luckily we had the weekend to decompress before going back to work and school. We ate SO MUCH delicious food while away, that Tom and I agreed to do a bit of a cleanse when we returned. I spent the weekend making bone broth and prepping fruits and veggies for juicing this week.

After reading some horrific articles about the gross stuff on produce, I decided that we need to be more thorough about cleaning ours. Ick. It was weirdly satisfying to give our groceries a scrub down. I spent a few hours (seriously) on Saturday doing this. Clearly I have issues.

I know that I should probably post vacation pics after a trip instead of vegetable washing pics, but I am preoccupied that way today.

Look at this mess! Embarrassing, but I’m showing it like it is. You can see my secret shame (Chik-fil-A iced tea) and my obsession with wooden spoons.

A pot of bone broth getting started on the stove. Do you love simmering stuff? Giving it a stir every so often makes me feel so productive!

I had a bit of a melt down the evening before we left for Florida. It had been a very busy week at work and home so everything was feeling very last minute. I had really wanted to pick out a new cross stitch project for the trip, something gorgeous and monumental for a next project, but alas, it never happened.

So there I was scrambling and fretting about what to bring, because, can you EVEN IMAGINE going on a trip without a cross stitch project?! No! I can’t either!

I finally decided on 2 little patterns from the Internet and packed them along with fabric scraps and floss from my collection. It wasn’t exactly the monumental next project I wanted.

Screen Shot 2015-04-06 at 11.56.45 AM

On the left is a Minecraft Creeper bookmark for Biggest. I don’t like it because the greens are too dark, so you can’t really make out his black features. Yes, I am being picky about a silly Minecraft bookmark. Must. Do. Over.

On the right is a little freebie I downloaded from Craftsy. It will eventually have bees on it and a cute little saying. I don’t love the colors or fabric, but that’s what you get for 9pm on a Wednesday. Sigh.

Lesson learned : Pack cross stitch projects before anything else!

Hope you all had a great week! {Vacation photos tomorrow… maybe…}

What’s making you happy today?

Hearts ‘n stuff

Happy Almost-Valentines Day, friends!

I went to look on my phone for some pictures to post from the last few days and found nothing of interest to share. There were a few videos of Tom and I singing “those were the days” to my piano playing a la Archie and Edith, but there’s no way those will be posted on the Internets for all of eternity.

This felt like a very long, hard week.

This weekend, I am looking forward to:

making heart shaped pancakes

baking a heart shaped dessert

wearing pink and red (maybe at the same time!)

xoxo-ing my valentines

putting cute labels on the dry goods in the pantry (so excited for this!)

making homemade laundry detergent

using my new iron. (what can I say, it’s exciting around here.)

Charles in Charge

There’s something about the start of a new year that inspires me to clean and get organized! I think this might be a universal feeling because I’m noticing it on a lot of blogs.

{Insert random picture of Charlie because he’s just so darn cute!}

This weekend was very productive! First, I tackled the basement and the guest bedroom. It is easy to toss odds and ends into these rooms intending to “deal with them later”, then shut the door and promptly forget about them. I spent all Saturday tidying and dusting and organizing and packing things up to be donated or sold. Yippiiii! That’s my idea of a good time (wild, I know!).

Sunday, I cleaned and organized the pantry top to bottom, then filled it up again after a massive shopping trip. Does a stocked and organized pantry make anyone else insanely happy? Sometimes I go in just to stare at the nice straight rows of cans and boxes and jars. Tom rolls his eyes when I talk about my “systems,” but they are the best!

I spent almost the entire day in the kitchen, cooking all kinds of yummy things to get us through the week; meatloaf, spaghetti sauce, beans & rice, soup, fresh juice. Bring it on, Week!

Lest you think it was all chores around here, we had a lovely date night on Saturday to dinner and a comedy show. I ate a really tasty roast beet salad. Why are restaurant salads always SO MUCH better than home salads?

And did I tell you already that Charlie caught a MOUSE?! Tom was pretty proud of him, but I was mostly horrified that we had a mouse in the house. Ugh. I guess I should be glad, however, that any mice we have will now have to deal with this tough guy. Be warned, Evil Mice.

Home Sweet Home.

Hi! Remember me? It has been so long. I feel like I have a ton to write about, but at the same time, really nothing at all.

Paris was great, work wise. I got tons of inspiration for new projects. As usual, I was jet lagged and homesick. Clearly I was not made for the jet setting lifestyle.

I had fun buying little goodies for my gang; French comic books and cars for the boys, these cool stress reducing coloring books for me and Tom,

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 1.20.52 PM

and well.. I might have gotten myself a goodie too… (Seriously, how could I resist?!) you know, to help combat my home sickness.

It was sooooo good to come home though and see my bunch of sillies. I guess I’m just a homebody because I would trade Paris any day for…

It’s sure good to be home.

Hello! We are baaaaack!

Tom completed his 4th Ironman on Sunday. He worked really hard for this. I am so proud of him.

By some postal miracle, the shirts arrived just before we left for the airport so we were all sporting our shirts in support.

Arizona was beautiful and sunny and warm, but I’m glad to be home. I love my house and routines. We didn’t get back until after midnight. It was cold in the house and I was so unbelievably happy to crawl into my own bed and snuggle with my love.
