Tricks & Treats

Hi Blog! Another weekend has come and gone.

Saturday was windy and cold! Tom and Biggest went to the beach house to do some fishing and crabbing. Biggest has really caught the fishing bug! It’s great to see his enthusiasm.

While they were away, Littlest and I spent some quality time together. We:

shopped for Halloween costumes,

picked out Tom’s birthday presents (this Thursday! 45! Wheeee!),

made gluten free pumpkin muffins (yes, I’m back at it!),

did a little grocery shopping, where I managed to drop and shatter a glass bottle of tea tree oil in the checkout line at Whole Foods. Mortifying! Especially when people started to wrinkle their noses and say “What’s that smell?”

went on a gluten free pizza and frozen yogurt date,

and watched Zootopia while cross stitching!!!

On Sunday, we dragged the Halloween bins down from the attic, which led to hours of trying on old costumes and giggling hysterically. Here’s a random sampling of what we modeled:

Spock ears
Karate outfit
Chinese dress
Red Riding Hood/Wolf
Monk with pug head
Wednesday Addams

The BEST part is that I found a costume that I made for Sammy when he was just a puppy. He wore it to a costume contest and won. He was even featured on the evening news! Sammy has put on some weight over the years (sigh… haven’t we all?) and it no longer fits, but Charlie was able to be squeezed into it! HA!

The WORST part is that it’s been a few years since I’ve worn some of these costumes too and could barely get them zipped up. Sammy, I feel your pain.

Charlie, afterwards, obviously trying to forget the entire ordeal. Sorry, Charlie!

Happy Monday!

Happy Halloween!

Hi Friends! Did you have a good Halloween?

We are all a bit pooped from an overly social weekend. Too much socializing + introverts like us = eventual melt down.

Our festivities included:

Going to a total of 8 stores in search of SOLD OUT pumpkins. Who knew that this even happens? I finally gave up and bought an acorn squash. So lame.

Having our annual Halloween dinner. It was a bit low key this year since I was exhausted from the great pumpkin search.

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.08.07 PM

The menu highlights were the Spider (olives) and Jack O’Lantern pizzas,

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.09.32 PM

And Dracula’s Dentures cookies, which ended up looking more like Jokey Chattering Teeth instead.

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.06.49 PM

There was also some “magical potion” to drink. It was fizzy and bloody and made curious popping noises. Between you and me, it was seltzer, black cherry kool aid, and pop rocks.

We had a little visitor for the weekend. Holly!

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.22.41 PM

She did not appreciate having to wear a costume and hid under the table, but it was just too cute to take off.

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.24.17 PM

I did not get a single photo of the boys before we were off to trick or treat and various events. This was officially the year of bad planning.

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.26.01 PM

On Sunday, we had family over for yet another birthday dinner. Birthdays go on forever around here. This was the grand finale!

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.28.03 PM

By the time everyone left, I was ready to collapse somewhere alone with my stitching. Charlie had other ideas though.

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.31.52 PM

He was almost too cute to move, but even a cute cat can’t keep a woman away from her stitch-a-long. Deadlines, People!

I finished Day 2.

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.46.03 PM

And got ambitious with Day 3. This is as far as I got before giving up and going to bed.

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 1.47.49 PM

Sometimes you just have to quit while you’re ahead.

The End.

The pumpkin that got away

We never did make it to the pumpkin patch this year and when I went to buy pumpkins at 3 different stores, they were all sold out. Total Mom fail. This will forever be known as the Halloween with no pumpkins.

But, what can I say… there have been so many distractions: a rainy work trip to NY, losing power at the house, fixating on green embroidery thread, and this guy’s birthday…

Screen Shot 2015-10-30 at 10.37.02 AM

I could go on and on about how great he is and how much he means to me, but well, he’s a private kind of guy, so I will just say HAPPY BIRTHDAY QT! I LOVE YOU! And yes, that is pie instead of cake. We had a vote and decided that we all prefer pie to cake, unless it’s ice cream cake which changes everything.

And speaking of green thread, I got some options for the stitch-a-long:

Screen Shot 2015-10-30 at 10.44.15 AM

I’ve decided to use both dark and light green depending on which looks better with the particular fabric. Between that and all the different linen shades, this collection might start to look a bit crazy town, but we shall see.

Here’s the first day all stitched up with dark green. I am waiting to finish the borders depending on how each ornament will be made. 1 down, 11 to go! Screen Shot 2015-10-30 at 10.49.30 AM

Happy Friday! Enjoy your weekend!

On apple muffins, cross stitching, and chain saw killers…

What do you do when you finally fall asleep at 4AM only to have your darling wake you up at 4:45 with his snoring? You get out of bed and make apple muffins.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 9.41.19 AM

The crumbly bits on top were a little dry and weird, but the muffin part was thumbs up. But then again, anything sugary and warm probably tastes good when you are operating on little sleep.

On a brighter note, I’m enjoying this stitch-a-long.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 9.43.20 AM

I got most of the red done for Days 1 and 2 and now need to add the green. These are some greens that are in my stash but they aren’t quite right. I can’t decide between bright & modern or traditional & dark. Thoughts?

And a few more photos from the weekend…

We had our Halloween block party.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 10.22.03 AM

My favorite part was the horse drawn wagon rides.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 10.15.14 AM

I was planning to enter the pie baking contest, but forgot to bake a pie. How do you forget to bake a pie? Then Tom volunteered to be a pie judge and they picked someone else. We really failed at the pie competition this year.

Coal was popular in his sweater.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 10.17.40 AM

You know you’re a boy mom when walking in on this doesn’t even phase you. He was trying to show me that his socks have skulls on them too. A+ for follow through on a theme.

Happy Tuesday!

How is it that the weeks just keep speeding by? It seemed like it was just Summer and now here we are almost at the end of October.

It’s starting to look a bit like Halloween around here.

Screen Shot 2015-10-16 at 1.05.40 PM

I like any excuse to display my ouija board collection. Is it weird to have a ouija board collection in the first place?

Screen Shot 2015-10-16 at 1.03.34 PM

Spell check just informed me that I’ve been spelling ouija incorrectly for years. Some collector I am.

Screen Shot 2015-10-16 at 1.07.09 PM

I did the teensiest bit of stitching this week. It might be time to take a break and do some Christmas stitching because (yikes!) Christmas is just 2 months away! So much for planning ahead this year.

Screen Shot 2015-10-16 at 1.08.58 PM

But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, back to Halloween. We’ve got that covered.

The Basics

Helloooo Friday!

Usually I want life to slow down, but this week I’m glad that it sped up! Wahooooo! It’s Friday!!!

Next week is a big launch-to-do-of sorts at work so stress is high and tempers are flaring. My response is to close my office door and hide behind a giant computer screen. It works for the most part except when people look in the little window next to the door and do the “can I come in” mime and then come in anyway. What is up with that?!

Tom is finally feeling better. Praise the gods! I hope I didn’t just jinx things by saying that.

Random fun fact: In his heyday, Tom was invited to try out for the Phillies(!!!). For various reasons, he didn’t end up with a glamorous career in professional sports. I am glad because 1. We never would have met, and 2. He wouldn’t be spending his evenings playing baseball in the backyard with these 2 rascals. And seriously, is there anything cuter than that?

Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 12.37.53 PM

This weekend promises to be filled with kid stuff (appointments, scouts, inaugural outdoors (poo) club meeting) but I’m hoping to find some time for Halloweening (apple picking, pumpkin patch, important costume discussions). A mother’s work is never done!

Last night, I lit not one, but TWO, vanilla candles and the house smelled so homey and bakey and yummy. I realize this is Pumpkin Spice and/or Cinnamon candle season, but sometimes you just have to go with the basics.

Enjoy your weekend!

Why hello there! Happy November! This year just keeps spinning by!

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 3.52.41 PM

We had a really great Halloween. I love that Halloween was on a Friday this year. Even though the timeline is the same as always, I felt a little less rushed and easy going because, you know, not a school night.

My first foot selfie (footsie?)

I think that I outdid myself with our pre Trick-or-Treat meal this year…

A shot of bloooooood in my drink? Don’t mind if I do.

Brains for dessert…

Do you see that Oujia board behind the cupcakes? I found it in a thrift store last week. I did a little research and it’s from the 1940s which only makes it spookier! Stephanie warned me that it might be possessed but I couldn’t resist. That only adds to its allure.

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 3.54.36 PM

I don’t know if Halloween dinner is more fun for me or the kids. Biggest refused to eat the Sneezer Salad (really Cilantro dressing from Trader Joe’s) because he was too grossed out. Halloween is all about grossing out, if you ask me.

This year was a first where the boys decided to trick or treat separately, each with their own group of friends. I went with Biggest and we had a lovely time, especially since one of the Dads who came with us brought along a rolling cooler of beer. Haha. Genius!

Do you know how hard it is to get 6 kids still enough for a photo?

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 3.59.00 PM

Saturday was rainy and lazy. Really lazy. Activities were canceled and we had no where that we had to be. I laid around reading. It was pretty awesome. Then we ate Chinese food IN BED! It doesn’t get much lazier than that.

Sunday was just the right amount of lazy and busy. I made chili and homemade bread which are good lazy but busy meals to cook. After the initial prep work, you basically just have to leave the dough alone to rise and give the chili a bit of a stir every once in awhile. That leaves a lot of time in between for other lazy day endeavors, such as stitching and reading and eating Halloween candy (but we won’t talk about that).

My year long herbal course is winding down. It ends in December (hard to believe it’s been a year already), but there’s a bit of an intensive “boot camp” that’s going for the next few weeks. Of course I had to sign up for it. This part deals more with reflection, writing, and ritual. I’m loving it so far. I mindfully ate an apple.

Hope you all had spoooooooooky Halloweens!

Birthday Boy.

Remember when I used to write about cross stitching? Those were the days!

Life lately has been a lot of work travel. That makes for an unhappy and tired me.

But… the weekend was great!

We had an early celebration for Tom’s birthday! I can’t believe another year has gone by. He is so good to us every single day of the year, so we try to make him feel special on his day. We love him so!

I snuck home early from work and the boys and I baked him our famous Yum-Yum cake. Biggest helped me with the cake and Littlest with the frosting, so it was a group effort. It was Littlest’s idea to sprinkle the top with chocolate shavings, walnuts, and pomegranate. It was the perfect touch!

We were most excited, though, for gift time. It has been hard to keep the secret from him.  He got a…

He’s been hinting around for one, so I think that he liked his present. I like listening to him practice it every day. Between Tom’s new guitar and Biggest’s violin, we are turning into quite the musical household.

Other weekend highlights were:

The boys TIED their soccer game! Their first non-loss! Progress!

Biggest serenaded us with his violin.

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.27.18 AM

I made more applesauce. I recently read a quote “Cooking is science, art, and therapy.” Isn’t that so true?

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.12.54 AM

Biggest survived (and enjoyed!) a sleepover. He says that they only slept for 1 hour!

Sammy discovered how comfortable his sleeping bag was when he brought it home.

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.15.42 AM

When he got kicked out of it because he was “making it smell like dog butt,” he discovered another comfy spot.

Coal discovered how fashionable he looks in his Halloween sweater.

Good times!

Pumpkin Weekend.

I got sucked into the pumpkin madness this weekend.

It all started on Friday with pumpkin pie. Then I baked pumpkin muffins. There was leftover pumpkin from the muffins, so I decided to make pumpkin lattes (so good… recipe from here). Then Tom had pumpkin beer. By Sunday, I just wanted the pumpkin smell to be gone from our house.

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 1.14.53 PM

We had a nice weekend. We introduced the boys to MadLibs. They thought it was the funniest thing ever. No Mad Lib is complete until you use “boogies” as a noun.

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 1.07.59 PM

Tom and Biggest went out to breakfast together. It’s kinda their tradition, so Littlest and I went to Taekwondo and stopped at the library. He was excited to check out 2 video games. I was excited because I found a cookbook that combines 2 of my favorite things, Asian food + Pickles!

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 1.08.53 PM

The boys invited friends over and had a massive nerf gun war. I hid out upstairs and cleaned out closets while they tore up the downstairs. Didn’t I tell you that my life is full of exciting stuff?

On Sunday, we went on our annual costume finding mission. Biggest already has his costume (thankfully!) but Littlest still needed one. We went to THREE places and he could not find anything that he liked. Finally, we went home and looked online and he found something that he liked right away. Annoyingly, it was sold at the first store we went to!!! I had to drive back to get it because I am too cheap to pay shipping for something located 3 miles away!!! Blergh!!! And can I just say that I am so sick of slutty Halloween costumes? I saw slutty Harry Potter AND slutty Thing 1 and Thing 2 in the store! Whatever happened to those clever and funny homemade costumes people used to wear, like Cereal Killer and Dirty Laundry?! Someone will probably make a slutty Cereal Killer costume now. Ugh. So annoyed.

But on a happier note, there’s this! It is quite certainly NOT slutty cross stitch!

Happy Monday!

Tricks & Treats.

Did you have a nice Halloween?

Mine was lovely. I had my reading, which was great! It was a lot to take in and I’m still processing all that she said.

Afterwards, I met Stephanie for lunch. She has some exciting stuff in the works which I can’t wait to show all of you! Hint… it has to do with CROSS STITCHING! YAY!

We had a yummy lunch then spent some quality time at the bookstore. It is so fun to spend a rainy cold afternoon at the bookstore with a friend. *Note to self… why don’t I do this more often?

To round out my super self indulgent day, I stopped at my favorite herb shop on the way home. What a treat!

I was a bad Mom and did not make a Halloween themed dinner, but did manage to whip up some Blood Punch.

Screen shot 2013-11-01 at 11.41.55 AM

You can also see the extremely creepy pizza that we ordered in the background. 😉

To further prove what a bad Mother I was, this is the ONLY picture that I managed to take of the boys.

Screen shot 2013-11-01 at 11.49.26 AM

Fun was had by all, but little legs get tired quickly while trick-or-treating and we didn’t last long. And so concludes Halloween 2013.
