Ermahgerd! A blerg!

Hi Blog!

We had a great weekend but I barely took any photos, so does that mean that it never happened? You will have to use your imagination today.

This weekend, we:
made soap (Oatmeal Honey again. I’m a one trick pony.)

screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-11-22-43-am

made yogurt (no pic, but it was good!)

went to the trampoline park (no pic, but the boys were sweaty!)

ate the best Vodka Rigatoni. Do you know how to determine if you’ve found your true love? I wanted to order the Vodka Rigatoni because it’s my favorite but Tom wanted to get it too. So I ordered the scallops instead, because we can’t both get the same thing (weird rule in my head). So then Tom told me that he didn’t really like the Vodka Rigatoni so we switched and I happily scarfed it down in record time, only to figure out later that he really like the VR better, but pretended he didn’t so that I could have it. Sniff. True love.

hunted for Pokemon (Biggest is really into making memes these days)

broke the paddle on my stand mixer. Waaaaaaah! Mixer, why have you forsaken me??!!!!

Happy Monday!

Around Here

Hi Blog!

I’m getting bored with these trip posts, so today let’s take a break to talk about what’s been going on around here lately.

Are you as happy as I am that Fall has arrived? It’s still hot in Pennsylvania, but there’s that bit of crispness in the air to show that the seasons are changing. Yay!

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-12-58-30-pm

I am feeling especially thankful these days to be back into our school and home routines. I do love me some routines! Taurus much?

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-12-59-51-pm

Soccer season is in full swing so our Saturday mornings are spent on the field. The weather has been perfect for this so I can’t complain. The boys have been playing hard and I love to watch them.

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-11-12-13-am

In addition to Soccer, they both signed up for a running program that culminates in a 5k. Littlest said that he wanted us to run the 5k as a family. I foolishly agreed. This week, I broke out my super fashionable knee brace and 80s music mix and restarted the Couch to 5k training. Mom guilt sure makes you do some crazy things!

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-12-57-40-pm

I really fell off the gluten free train while we were away and it’s been soooooooo hard to get back on. Every day I start strong, then stuff like this happens…

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-12-56-53-pm

I know at some point I really need to commit to the diet again, but WHY IS GLUTEN SO DELICIOUS?!?!!!

Speaking of delicious, the boys and I continued our Saturday dinner tradition with an Asian inspired evening of Dumplings, Soy & Ginger Glazed Cornish Game Hen with Bok Choy and Shitake Mushrooms, and Mango Sorbet. Yum. They are seriously upping their game.

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-1-01-27-pm

And in stitching news… I’m discussing Halloween stitching in the October issue of CrossStitcher magazine, available on newsstands now (Haha. I’ve always wanted to say that)! It feels these days like I write about cross stitching more than I actually cross stitch, but blergh… such is the life of a working mother.

Happy Friday, Friends!

Ooh la la

Hi Blog.

Sometimes when I have a lot to write about, I get overwhelmed and avoid writing altogether. Actually, that applies to pretty much every area in my life, not just writing.

But today I’ve decided to JUST DO IT, so here goes…

Our trip to Paris was pretty great. I won’t bore you with all of the details, but here are some of my favorite memories.

I KonMaried my suitcase. Don’t ask how it looked on the way home. Let’s just say that KonMari would not have been impressed.

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-8-40-38-am

On the first day, we went to Sacré-Cœur and Montmartre. Sacré-Cœur creeped me out a little. I don’t know why, maybe just the thought of all the stories held within those walls.

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-8-43-35-am

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-8-45-34-am

I insisted that we walk to the top of the Arc de Triomphe. I took the same photo when I was there in January, but this one is better because Tom’s feet are in it too. Everything is more fun with my partner in crime.

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-8-49-36-am

Notre Dame is pretty impressive. I couldn’t get over how old it is (construction began in 1163!!!). Can you imagine carving all of this by hand! With no electricity!

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-8-59-46-am

I am ashamed to admit that I may have checked Pokemon Go while at Notre Dame (I know… I know) but Pikachu FINALLY showed up! And the worst part is that I was so busy taking pictures of him to send to Littlest at home that he GOT AWAY!

One of many random stately buildings.

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-8-57-12-am

Le sigh. So charming.

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-9-12-00-am

We enjoyed strolling on the quais along the Seine. They had set up a little “Paris Beach” on one of the quais which was kinda weird and hilarious. Here is Tom mid- “Bonjour!”

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-8-58-17-am

We ate and ate and ate… bone marrow and escargot and fois gras and Tartare de Filet de Boeuf (i.e. RAW STEAK) and more baguettes than I could count (needless to say, I fell off the gluten free diet).

I was particularly fond of the super indulgent flower-shaped gelatos.

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-9-02-32-am

When we go out to dinner in the US, I always try to convince Tom to same-side-sit with me and he refuses, but in France, EVERYONE same-side-sits! In fact, they MAKE you same-side-sit even if you don’t want to!

We spent a full day at the Louvre and LOVED it (sorry for the excessive capitalization) but that deserves an entire post of its own because it was AMAZING (there I go again). The gardens! The artwork! The history! MON DIEU!

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-9-08-23-am

Yeah, the Eiffel Tower. So cliche, but what can you do?

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-9-09-06-am

And! You better believe that I had some cross stitching adventures! More coming on that too!!! Here’s a teaser.

Le OMG! French cross stitch patterns! I died and went to heaven!

Fancy Blog Stuff

Hi Blog!

Do you notice something different at the top there? I have my own domain!

Hopefully you were seamlessly redirected here to the sparkly new stitch-therapy.com but if you use bookmarks or a blog reader, they will need to be updated. WordPress followers and email subscribers are supposed to transfer automatically to the new site (fingers crossed), but it might not be a bad idea to add yourself as a follower to the new blog because I’m not sure how long you’ll get transferred (technologically challenged). Please let me know if you run into any problems. Sorry!

OK, enough housekeeping. How are you? What’s new?

The boys are very excited to be finishing up their last week of school. I can’t believe that another year has come and gone. Good-bye 3rd and 5th grades!

This weekend…

Littlest played his final roller hockey game of the season. He really loved his first hockey experience and is already talking about trying ice hockey. I am happy to be hanging up my skates for the time being.

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 6.26.15 PM

We discovered an amazing gluten free pizza place. It was so good!

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 6.22.15 PM

I have officially been off of gluten now for over 4 weeks! I can’t say that there has been a radical change in my health or that all of my problems have gone away, but I do feel somewhat better and plan to stick with it longer to see how things go. Giving up gluten has surprisingly not been too hard, but it WAS pretty exciting to eat pizza again.

We enjoyed our first meal outside. We are in that weather sweet spot where it’s no longer rainy (but not too sunny) and it’s warm (but not too hot) and the mosquitos aren’t out yet (but the lightening bugs are).

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 6.22.47 PM

No stitching to tell you about because this website stuff has been consuming my free time (Ick!). Hopefully we are in the home stretch and stitching will resume PRONTO!

Happy Thursday, Friends!

The Struggle is Real

Hi Blog.

It has been a really challenging few days for me health-wise. On Friday, I started feeling dizzy and tingly and lightheaded at work. By the time evening rolled around, I was bone tired and body achey and stomach achey as if I had the flu.

Of course, what do you do when you’re on the couch sick but check Google. Google told me that the symptoms that I was feeling could be due to gluten withdrawal and some people experience them when they start a gluten free diet. Imagine that! I had never heard of such a thing.

I felt really bad through the entire weekend to the point of wanting to just give up and eat a big old bagel already, but I am persevering and trying to think positively. This is a small price to pay in the long run if it does in fact help my issues. My current strategy is to lay off the “gluten free” flours and such (I was kinda excited to try all of them!) and just stick to eating clean and healthy and bland. Think meat, rice, broth, veggies and fruit.

But enough talk… pictures!

I am so thankful for the river. Lunchtime walks help keep me sane.

Screen Shot 2016-05-24 at 1.08.11 PM.png

Gluten free banana bread. It was yummy! Will save this recipe for later when I can reintroduce some flours.

Screen Shot 2016-05-24 at 1.09.21 PM.png

Oh Charlie! He is so mischievous. Can I seriously love this cat any more than I do?

Screen Shot 2016-05-24 at 1.10.52 PM.png

Speaking of Charlie, that blur in his mouth is a chipmunk that he caught and brought inside. A lively chase ensued before we were able to get the chipmunk to run back outside.

Screen Shot 2016-05-24 at 1.11.57 PM.png

I felt reaaaaaaally bad yesterday and anxious and panicky about things, so I went and sat under the big pine tree in our back yard. It’s kind of a magical place. Deep breaths. This too shall pass.

Screen Shot 2016-05-24 at 1.15.42 PM.png

Around here

It has been so long since the last post! In the last 9 days…

I accidentally flushed my fitbit down the toilet. I know, how does that kind of thing even happen? But it happened. Is it even worth it to move now that I don’t get credit for it? #lazygirlproblems

I’ve been commuting a lot to NYC which means train time to cross stitch.

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.46.33 AM.png

Making progress and feeling reinvigorated now that I’ve gotten past the lady! Can you see the man emerging with his little top hat and bobbed hair? Haha. What a looker!

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.22.42 AM.png

I’ve been having tummy troubles (for years) and have not had much success with doctors on the matter. Recently, I decided to give gluten-free a try to see if it helps. So far, it has! But it’s too early to know if it’s just coincidence or the real deal. (And, yes… the painful irony that I finally baked a good loaf of bread!)

I’ve been eating lots of zoodles…

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.31.17 AM.png

And Asian dishes…

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.33.07 AM.png

And we are loving gluten free chocolate chip cookies! Rice flour is my new best friend!

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.33.58 AM.png

We enjoyed some fishing…

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.35.00 AM.png

And Biggest earned his Arrow of Light award in Scouts. I’m proud of him for sticking with it considering he’s wanted to quit a bajillion times over the years. (And I’m beyond THRILLED to be ending my illustrious tenure as a Scout leader!)

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.37.42 AM.png

Awful lighting, no makeup, rambunctious kids, and lazy cat… This is pretty much sums up life around here. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 9.50.28 AM.png

What’s new in your world???

Breaking Bread

Hello Blog!

I went to the library during lunch last week and got a book on baking bread.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.42.43 PM.png

Of course, that meant there was bread baking this weekend. The results were ok. I don’t know what the problem is, but my bread always seems just “ok”, never “stellar.” You know how sometimes you eat a piece of bread and there’s not even butter or anything on it, but it still tastes so amazing and delicious? Crispy on the outside but soft and a little chewy on the inside and just the right ratio of crust to center? That isn’t my bread. Does anyone have tips, or better yet, a secret family recipe to share? Sigh… dreams.

I was cleaning on Saturday and came across my little loom from the weaving class that Stephanie and I took. I had no choice but to weave a few lines before putting it away. I just played around with trying to keep the lines even. It needs work.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.37.27 PM.png

Littlest is starting roller hockey this week. It’s his first year, so in addition to learning the rules of hockey, he also has to learn how to roller blade! I am pretty impressed with how fast he got the hang of it.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.35.37 PM.png

Yesterday, he asked me if I could practice with him, so I unearthed my dusty roller blades from the garage and strapped them on for the first time in 15 (gasp!) years. I’m not sure what I’m doing in this picture, but the smile is masking the terror I feel inside.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.36.48 PM.png

Tom and I are watching the final season of Mad Men on Netflix (I know, we are hopelessly years behind on current pop culture). Binge watching a season means lots of cross stitching time.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.38.16 PM.png

I finally finished the black part on creepy lady’s skirt. Wheeee! I’m on fire!

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.42.17 PM.png

Happy Monday! Did you have a fun weekend?

Crazy Cat Lady

Hi Blog!

I’ve been trying to post more on Instagram so if you follow me there, some of these pics are a repeat, so sorry! I can’t wrap my head around what to post where. #oldladyproblems

I’m not quite recovered from traveling and am still getting up in the wee hours of the morning. It’s annoying to be falling asleep by 8pm, but I do enjoy those quiet early morning hours alone in the kitchen.

On Saturday, I made Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup), which is a favorite for Tom and Biggest. The recipe starts with grinding and roasting spices which is such a satisfying task.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 1.43.25 PM.png

The only problem is that the spices smell so good as they are roasting that it makes me hungry and, at that point, the broth is still many hours from being finished. It’s a process.

By mid morning, the boys were going a little stir crazy, so we decided to venture out in search of a sledding hill that still had some snow, not an easy feat! The hill at the school was a slushy muddy mess. Then Biggest suggested that we try the seminary near our house. It was still pristine and snowy! I guess the seminary folks aren’t big on sledding.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 1.50.29 PM.png

Sunday was chore day. I’m pretty much a weirdo who enjoys doing things like cleaning out the Tupperware cabinet and lining up the canned goods in the pantry. So satisfying. Anyone else with me on that one? Please tell me I’m not alone.

Charlie kept climbing into my shopping bags as I was trying to fill them with decluttered junk. It would have been really annoying if he wasn’t the cutest cat on Earth.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 2.01.36 PM.png

Speaking of cute cats, I have been addicted to an app called Neko Atsume. It’s a game where you try to attract cats to your yard by leaving out toys and beds and food. Then you can take pictures of them and buy more stuff for them. Basically, it’s pointless, but I am obsessed.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 2.04.13 PM.png

OMG! Aren’t you dying at how cute the cats are? I keep texting pics of my screen to Tom and Stephanie. I know that they are rolling their eyes at me, but they humor me because they are the BEST! Evolution to crazy cat lady… LEVEL: COMPLETE.

And finally, Pinewood Derby time! Biggest won “Best in Show”. Yay!

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 1.57.41 PM.png

How was your weekend? Can you believe it’s FEBRUARY?!!

The Universe and Stuff

Blogs are a funny thing. I come here a few times a week and blabber on about my life. Usually it’s random stuff that I think no one would even be interested in and then… (YAY!)… there are actually people who come along and like the same random stuff as I do! It is so great!

I have been feeling bored and blah and out of sorts this week, then I found out (Thanks M!) that Venus is in retrograde and (Thanks S!) that we will have a second full moon this month! See! I am not just bored and blah and out of sorts for no reason. The whole Universe is working against us! We might as well just crawl right back into bed.

Littlest drew this. Isn’t it terrific?

Screen Shot 2015-07-29 at 9.29.55 AM

I have been experimenting in the kitchen this week and have had 2 successes so far (according to my menfolk). On Monday, I made meat sauce in the crockpot. Thanks Pinterest! The boys had it over pasta but Tom and I had it over spiral cut zucchini. It was SO GOOD! I have tried making zucchini “noodles” before, but sautéed and served with tomato sauce and they were always too mushy. The trick is RAW zucchini and meat sauce to give it some substance. Thumbs up!

Last night we had flank steak marinated in lemongrass and curry. It is my Mom’s recipe and it is delish. For any Vietnamese speakers, it is called bo xao xa cari. Yum.

I like this little verse..

Screen Shot 2015-07-29 at 9.25.46 AM

And this little cat…

Happy Wednesday, Friends!
