Tricks & Treats

Hi Blog! Another weekend has come and gone.

Saturday was windy and cold! Tom and Biggest went to the beach house to do some fishing and crabbing. Biggest has really caught the fishing bug! It’s great to see his enthusiasm.

While they were away, Littlest and I spent some quality time together. We:

shopped for Halloween costumes,

picked out Tom’s birthday presents (this Thursday! 45! Wheeee!),

made gluten free pumpkin muffins (yes, I’m back at it!),

did a little grocery shopping, where I managed to drop and shatter a glass bottle of tea tree oil in the checkout line at Whole Foods. Mortifying! Especially when people started to wrinkle their noses and say “What’s that smell?”

went on a gluten free pizza and frozen yogurt date,

and watched Zootopia while cross stitching!!!

On Sunday, we dragged the Halloween bins down from the attic, which led to hours of trying on old costumes and giggling hysterically. Here’s a random sampling of what we modeled:

Spock ears
Karate outfit
Chinese dress
Red Riding Hood/Wolf
Monk with pug head
Wednesday Addams

The BEST part is that I found a costume that I made for Sammy when he was just a puppy. He wore it to a costume contest and won. He was even featured on the evening news! Sammy has put on some weight over the years (sigh… haven’t we all?) and it no longer fits, but Charlie was able to be squeezed into it! HA!

The WORST part is that it’s been a few years since I’ve worn some of these costumes too and could barely get them zipped up. Sammy, I feel your pain.

Charlie, afterwards, obviously trying to forget the entire ordeal. Sorry, Charlie!

Happy Monday!

Mountain Girl

Hi Blog!

Last weekend was amazing! The boys had off from school on Monday, so I figured that we’d take advantage of the long weekend and go to the beach house. Unfortunately, there was a date mix up and Tom told someone else that they could use the house! Of course, I sulked and carried on for a good few hours because that’s what I do.

Things turned around quickly though because Sweetie McSweet-Tom surprised us with a getaway to the mountains instead. We had so much fun!!!

We rented a beautiful house. It was very private and quiet on 12 acres of land.

The house was kid (and adult friendly) with a trampoline and ping pong table and foozeball and, perhaps the coolest thing I’ve ever seen, swings hanging by the rafters in the basement.

We were all big fans of the hot tub.

The boys had fun exploring and doing boy things.

On Saturday, we went on a 15 mile bike ride in the mountains! The best part is that they drive you to the top of the mountain and you just bike DOWNHILL. That is brilliant if you ask me.

This was us at the beginning when we were still fresh and cheery.

The sights were pretty glorious.

We took a lot of breaks.

Here is my artistic shot of Tom at the opening of an old railroad bridge. Littlest thought that it looked like a dinosaur eye!

Tom and Biggest did a lot of fishing, which meant that Biggest was in Heaven.

I was in Heaven too, stitching while admiring this scenery.

I moved every once in awhile to find a shady spot.

The boys did not catch a lot, but they were very proud.

They insisted on learning how to clean the fish (Thanks a lot, YouTube) and preparing it for dinner.

We had enough to make a very small appetizer. It was delicious.

The next day, we found a quiet beach at the lake.

I love him.

In the evenings, we played board games and some very exciting Blackjack.

On Monday, Tom and Biggest went out early for more fishing.

Littlest and I played a few competitive rounds of Don’t Break the Ice. My baby, age 10 with bedhead.

I have always thought of myself as a Beach Girl, but this weekend has me thinking that Mountain Girl has a pretty nice ring to it.

Might be time to reconsider.

Memorial Day at the Beach (in pictures)

Hi Blog!

We just returned from a lovely 5 days at the beach. It was very relaxing.

Biggest has developed a real passion for fishing, so there was plenty of that.

Fishing is just my kind of activity. How can you go wrong with sitting around looking at the water and eating corn chips?

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.36.19 AM

We also gave crabbing a go. Don’t ask me why I felt the need to point at the crabs in every picture.

We are lucky to live on the bay, so Biggest could run back and forth to check the traps. He was very dedicated and even went in the early morning drizzles. He caught 17 crabs!

We rode our bikes a lot, which I loved. This is the best picture I could get without crashing.

The beach was pretty cold, but people still got in. Those people did not include me.

Look how tall he’s getting!

We went to the old fashioned 5&10 store and I found a fanny pack! Why did these things ever fall out of fashion? I was so excited and texted this photo to Stephanie. She called it my granny pack. Thanks Steph.

We ate a ton of yummy beach food.

And visited the cats at the cat rescue. They had over 90 cats! It was like a real life version of Neko Atsume. We would’ve brought home a few if Tom hadn’t put his foot down. I guess it’s good that someone in our family can exercise restraint when it comes to cats.

Of course, there was lots of cross stitching on the porch.

Hello distinguished gentleman!

Sammy kept me company with his loud snores.

I love the beach!

Goodbye Summer.

We had a full and busy weekend. On Saturday, we hosted a big family party for Littlest’s birthday. It required a lot of cooking and cleaning and freaking out, which are my favorite things to do (cooking and cleaning, not freaking out).

On Sunday, we went fishing. I filmed the boys for 4 minutes reeling in a HUGE FISH, before we realized that it was a snag. It was exciting though while it lasted.

I am always surprised that the boys actually enjoy fishing, because they are usually into higher energy (i.e. noisier) activities. I’m not complaining! It’s great to see them liking something that does not require batteries.

Our guests left this morning and school begins next Tuesday! Summer is almost officially over!

The weeks are always busy once school starts, but I am looking forward to getting back into our regular routines. It feels good to get things accomplished.

Speaking of accomplishments, Tom has been working really hard at work AND at house renovations. I am so proud of and thankful for him! Sometimes I sneak around and take pictures of him, which he hates, but I think are cute. Here he is doing construction drawings. He is old school about certain things which cracks me up … no CAD for this guy!

Hope that you all are enjoying the week. Happy Tuesday!

Under the Blood Moon.

We’re baaaack!!!

Sometimes I find traveling to be more stressful than relaxing, but we really enjoyed ourselves this time. We were in Florida for 8 days and it flew by.

We went wave-running, fishing, beaching, pooling, golf-cart riding, mermaid watching, and ate our weight in Stone Crabs and Grouper. It was a lot of fun.

The trip started like this… with Littlest losing his front tooth.

Remember when it was exciting just to ride a tram car at the airport?

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.14.53 AM

On the first day we went jet skiing, which was rather traumatic for a few of us. There was a lot of concern about sharks. I just held on for dear life and enjoyed watching the dolphins.

Here we are making our daily trek to the pool. We tried to walk a lot in an effort to combat the huge amounts of food that we consumed.

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.17.56 AM

It was great to see Littlest go from being afraid to put his face in the water at the beginning of our trip to being a total daredevil by the end.

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.25.40 AM

The highlight for Biggest was taking our nightly drive in the golf cart.

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.26.52 AM

I may have let him drive a few times (shhh!) so that I could take pictures.

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.28.02 AM

Seriously… look at this view. I didn’t even photoshop it!

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.29.12 AM

The highlight of the trip for me was this. Cross stitching by the pool? YES, PLEASE!

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.51.52 AM

The weather was amazing. We only had one rainy day. The guys went into the pool anyway. I sat under the porch and cross stitched. I could get used to that.

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.31.37 AM

Since the pool was pretty empty that day, the boys thought that it was HILARIOUS to pretend to be floating dead heads in the hot tub. I don’t know whose idea it was, but I have to admit that it was kinda hilarious.

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.33.23 AM

Another highlight of the trip for me was watching my Dad teach the boys to fish. I thought that they would find it boring, but was pleasantly surprised that they really loved it!

We went to Siesta Key and Madiera Beach. They were both so nice. We are used to NJ beaches, so were thrilled with the warm, clear waters in Florida. (Melania! After much searching, I found one perfect shell!)

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 10.37.56 AM

Tom and I had trouble sleeping one night and it just so happened to by the night of the Lunar Eclipse… Blood Moon! We didn’t want to wake everyone so we looked at it through the window. It looked more pink than red, but so neat. Did anyone else see it?

It was a really special trip for a lot of reasons, but mostly because of these people.

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 11.11.18 AM

Everything is fun with these three. I’m so thankful for my life.

And for the first raven!
