Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Around Here

Hi Blog!

I’m getting bored with these trip posts, so today let’s take a break to talk about what’s been going on around here lately.

Are you as happy as I am that Fall has arrived? It’s still hot in Pennsylvania, but there’s that bit of crispness in the air to show that the seasons are changing. Yay!

I am feeling especially thankful these days to be back into our school and home routines. I do love me some routines! Taurus much?

Soccer season is in full swing so our Saturday mornings are spent on the field. The weather has been perfect for this so I can’t complain. The boys have been playing hard and I love to watch them.

In addition to Soccer, they both signed up for a running program that culminates in a 5k. Littlest said that he wanted us to run the 5k as a family. I foolishly agreed. This week, I broke out my super fashionable knee brace and 80s music mix and restarted the Couch to 5k training. Mom guilt sure makes you do some crazy things!

I really fell off the gluten free train while we were away and it’s been soooooooo hard to get back on. Every day I start strong, then stuff like this happens…

I know at some point I really need to commit to the diet again, but WHY IS GLUTEN SO DELICIOUS?!?!!!

Speaking of delicious, the boys and I continued our Saturday dinner tradition with an Asian inspired evening of Dumplings, Soy & Ginger Glazed Cornish Game Hen with Bok Choy and Shitake Mushrooms, and Mango Sorbet. Yum. They are seriously upping their game.

And in stitching news… I’m discussing Halloween stitching in the October issue of CrossStitcher magazine, available on newsstands now (Haha. I’ve always wanted to say that)! It feels these days like I write about cross stitching more than I actually cross stitch, but blergh… such is the life of a working mother.

Happy Friday, Friends!

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

A FROG!

Last night, I had 2 hours alone. What’s a Mom to do but arm herself with stolen Halloween candy (it’s really much better for the kids if I eat it), cozy up to the cat, and stitch the time away?

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.06.05 AM

It was going really well…

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.13.03 AM

Until I added the green. Things weren’t lining up and I finally realized that the Christmas tree is missing a tier.

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.08.44 AM

There was barely time to get upset before the house filled back up again with people who needed food and reading and bed time. It was probably good timing, as we will think of happier things and deal with this annoying frog on another day.

Speaking of happier things, it has been an amazing week of Indian Summer here. The boys and I had off for Election Day and were excited to get outside.

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.17.55 AM

The boys really wanted to go to the creek and catch minnows.

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.19.28 AM

We caught one minnow…

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.21.07 AM

And one frog (Do I sense a theme?)…

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.22.09 AM

Before getting bored, setting them free, and heading home.

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.30.40 AM

Chasing your friends around the house and causing havoc are much more fun than catching minnows anyway.

Happy Thursday!

Simple pleasures

There is something so exciting about the changing of the seasons. This morning, we woke to frost outside! Frost! In October!

The weekend was nice. It included:

roasting stuff over a fire:

dinner out sans kids (sangria!):

Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 9.20.39 AM

stitching more of this skirt (zzzzzz…):

building a model rocket:

Fascinating, right? Happy Monday!

So something really exciting happened…

Has anyone gotten the newest issue of Cross Stitch Collection magazine???

Screen Shot 2015-09-24 at 8.38.23 AM

That’s ME on page 5! OMG!!!!!!!!

Screen Shot 2015-09-24 at 8.42.06 AM

This is my favorite cross stitch magazine and I am equal parts flattered/excited/unworthy/embarrassed for the attention/thrilled to be in it.

Now I suddenly feel tongue tied, like I should write something funny and brilliant and cross stitchy… instead of my usual goofy cat-centric family stories.

So anyway…

The boys were off from school yesterday. I took off from work too. They invited friends over, so all day I listened to the sounds of kids playing and fighting and making up and asking for food and losing their shoes and slamming the door as they went inside and out and back again a million times. It was a perfect kind of day.

It’s always nice to have friends over because the boys have fun and I get to sneak in some time for myself. We all know what that means…

Screen Shot 2015-09-24 at 9.00.29 AM

YAY! I am loving this pattern. It’s great for jumping around from motif to motif, so things don’t get boring. Well, except for the big black area which will be her skirt. I am putting that off for now.

And did you spy the orange leaves? Happy FALL!

Birthday Boy.

Remember when I used to write about cross stitching? Those were the days!

Life lately has been a lot of work travel. That makes for an unhappy and tired me.

But… the weekend was great!

We had an early celebration for Tom’s birthday! I can’t believe another year has gone by. He is so good to us every single day of the year, so we try to make him feel special on his day. We love him so!

I snuck home early from work and the boys and I baked him our famous Yum-Yum cake. Biggest helped me with the cake and Littlest with the frosting, so it was a group effort. It was Littlest’s idea to sprinkle the top with chocolate shavings, walnuts, and pomegranate. It was the perfect touch!

We were most excited, though, for gift time. It has been hard to keep the secret from him.  He got a…

Guitar!

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.04.42 AM

He’s been hinting around for one, so I think that he liked his present. I like listening to him practice it every day. Between Tom’s new guitar and Biggest’s violin, we are turning into quite the musical household.

Other weekend highlights were:

The boys TIED their soccer game! Their first non-loss! Progress!

Biggest serenaded us with his violin.

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.27.18 AM

I made more applesauce. I recently read a quote “Cooking is science, art, and therapy.” Isn’t that so true?

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.12.54 AM

Biggest survived (and enjoyed!) a sleepover. He says that they only slept for 1 hour!

Sammy discovered how comfortable his sleeping bag was when he brought it home.

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.15.42 AM

When he got kicked out of it because he was “making it smell like dog butt,” he discovered another comfy spot.

Coal discovered how fashionable he looks in his Halloween sweater.

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.17.50 AM

We went to our Halloween Block Party, where we wore costumes…

Went on a horse drawn carriage ride…

Participated in a donut eating contest…

Hung out with other ninjas and army guys…

And went on a Halloween parade.

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.44.29 AM

Good times!

Excuse me while I blow my nose.

Ahhh- CHOO! I officially have my first cold of the season, so my 4 day weekend was full of soggy tissues and NyQuil. Ick.

On Thursday, I dragged the boys around on errands. We went looking for new dog beds and ended up with a beta fish. His name is Finn and he’s blue.

We did get dog beds too.

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 1.55.01 PM

Everyone had to try them out.

Success!

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 1.56.10 PM

On Friday, the boys were otherwise occupied so I could be a complete slug, except that I wasn’t. In my delirious state, I tried to finish my quilt and it REALLY SUCKED. So I just cut up the stupid thing and made pillows instead.

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 2.00.03 PM

They don’t match anything else in our house, but I don’t care. After all of the time and effort and money that went into them, we WILL use them!

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 2.02.21 PM

Anyhoo… on Saturday, we had soccer and it was hot. The boys were sweaty and frustrated and I was trying to be peppy and supportive (“Good play! Wow! Great save! Go team!) but I was really pretty feverish and tired. Luckily we made it through the game (6-0, we lost), afternoon playdates, and went out to dinner. The boys thought that it was super fancy to sit on a couch at a restaurant. Yay for easy dinners.

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 2.16.50 PM

I perked up a little on Sunday so we went apple picking. We got a lot of apples.

So we made applesauce and ate it with whipped cream, which was good. We still have a lot of apples though.

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 2.26.44 PM

Then the best part of the weekend happened. You know, the part in which Tom hung up my cross stitch projects!!! Wheeee!

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 2.04.40 PMScreen Shot 2014-09-29 at 2.05.16 PM

This really deserves some break-out-the-good-camera action, but have I mentioned that I’m feverish, so phone pics will have to do for now.

Behold!

It’s like a museum of cross stitch! Dedicated to ME! I’m not an egomaniac, I swear. Or am I? How embarrassing. >gulp<

An apple a day.

Look at me on a blog posting roll!

Happy Wednesday! Last night we ate grilled salmon, rice, and sautéed “power greens”. That’s really what they were called. I feel full of power today (not). In fact, it was extra hard to crawl out of bed because bed was extra cozy and warm.

I am still trying hard to appreciate the little things like:
a nice boss,
when you’re driving and a really great song comes on the radio,
sitting on your honey’s lap and having the kids say “Look at that happy couple!”,
some alone time with your oldest son while everyone else is at taekwondo,
going through that same son’s baby albums to help him pick out photos for his timeline project,
a secret space heater under my desk at work.

Tonight we have leftovers and Scouts, then tomorrow we have OFF! Hip Hip Hooray!

This weekend, I vow to hang all of my cross stitched projects that came back from the framers, put out some Fall decorations (the only time no one questions witchy decor), and maybe go apple picking. Is it too early for apple picking? Is it ever too early for apple picking?

Here’s a photo from the last time we went apple picking. Holy heck… my hair was long!

TGIF.

I’m doing the Friday happy dance (quietly) at my desk.

This weekend = soccer (I’m already tired of soccer.  This is going to be a looooong season), karate belt test, bread baking, getting Fall stuff out of storage (maybe), and being outside enough to enjoy the lovely weather (hopefully).

Tom asked me if I want to go to the beach one more time in October. Of course, I said YES! Now I am excited.

Do you guys read Pauline from Plum Street Samplers’ blog? She is so so so talented and she is having a Mystery Sampler Stitch-a-long thing. I am soooooooo tempted to do this, but seriously… another project? Maybe some of you are planning to do it and I can follow along vicariously?

I also love this new Lizzie Kate pattern available for preorder from The Cottage Needle.

So many pretty patterns… so little time.

This weekend, I…

I got a really good night’s sleep last night. Finally. Who knew that sleep makes such a big difference in one’s life?

Our weekend was nice. The weather is getting chilly. I lit my Pumpkin Spice candle which means that Fall is officially on the way.

This weekend, I:

-made sugar-free apple zucchini muffins. I used stevia. They were not a hit.

-got our new family room furniture! YAY! At first I didn’t like it and had buyer’s remorse, but now I love it!

-rearranged our living room furniture. I think it looks better. Tom and I sat in there while the boys had friends over in the family room. We felt very grown up, like Ward and June.

-discovered a new Vietnamese restaurant that is closer to home. Yum. Yum. So good. Yum.

-shopped for new jeans for the boys. Why do they keep growing so fast?!!

-stitched a little bit, but got frustrated. This pattern keeps getting harder and harder. I’m at the part where I have to stitch cream colored sheep onto cream colored linen. So hard to see!!!

-learned how to make a photo collage. See?

What did you do this weekend?
