Tricks & Treats

Hi Blog! Another weekend has come and gone.

Saturday was windy and cold! Tom and Biggest went to the beach house to do some fishing and crabbing. Biggest has really caught the fishing bug! It’s great to see his enthusiasm.

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-33-24-pm

While they were away, Littlest and I spent some quality time together. We:

shopped for Halloween costumes,

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-27-19-pm

picked out Tom’s birthday presents (this Thursday! 45! Wheeee!),

made gluten free pumpkin muffins (yes, I’m back at it!),

did a little grocery shopping, where I managed to drop and shatter a glass bottle of tea tree oil in the checkout line at Whole Foods. Mortifying! Especially when people started to wrinkle their noses and say “What’s that smell?”

went on a gluten free pizza and frozen yogurt date,

and watched Zootopia while cross stitching!!!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-31-19-pm

On Sunday, we dragged the Halloween bins down from the attic, which led to hours of trying on old costumes and giggling hysterically. Here’s a random sampling of what we modeled:

Spock ears
Karate outfit
Cowboy/Cowgirl
Caveman/Cavegirl
Chinese dress
Red Riding Hood/Wolf
Monk with pug head
Wednesday Addams

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-28-36-pm

The BEST part is that I found a costume that I made for Sammy when he was just a puppy. He wore it to a costume contest and won. He was even featured on the evening news! Sammy has put on some weight over the years (sigh… haven’t we all?) and it no longer fits, but Charlie was able to be squeezed into it! HA!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-29-18-pm

The WORST part is that it’s been a few years since I’ve worn some of these costumes too and could barely get them zipped up. Sammy, I feel your pain.

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-26-43-pm

Charlie, afterwards, obviously trying to forget the entire ordeal. Sorry, Charlie!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-30-09-pm

Happy Monday!

Around here…

Tom and I have been taking turns being sick.

The two older guys (Tom and Biggest) went to the beach house to go crabbing. Biggest caught 2 blue crabs and proudly cooked them.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-04-31-pm

Littlest and I went to the roller rink (old pic from last Summer, also known as my roller queen days)

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-05-53-pm

And prepared a fondue feast for Tom and Biggest’s return home.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-06-40-pm

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-08-01-pm

Sunday was cold and rainy, so…

I baked Pesto bread (which got weirdly tall), but tasted delicious.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-09-37-pm

Tom hung our new (old) lucky horseshoes above the doors.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-09-59-pm

Littlest sat at the top of the stairs creating comic book characters.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-10-33-pm

Biggest disappeared into his room (Preteen! No photos!)

Sammy did what Sammy does best.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-15-41-pm

Coal celebrated his 15th birthday!

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-14-20-pm

Charlie hung out in a box.

What did you do this weekend?

A Simple Home

Hi Blog!

Where did this week go? Last night we had crazy thunderstorms. Thunder is kinda cool, but it keeps me up, which is not cool. Insomnia = baking.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.20.12 AM.png

Stephanie and I went to an antique place last weekend. I got this.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.18.30 AM.png

At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, but the sales ladies were staring me down as I was making my decision and it was only $14, which is something a bargain shopper like me could not resist. It’s growing on me now, but I feel like I am walking that fine line between decorating my house with “vintage character” and decorating my house “like a granny.”

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.28.16 AM.png

I also made a second batch of deodorant bars. So far, they are working really well. The true test will be when Summer comes. They will have their job cut out for them.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.21.39 AM.png

The other night, during a different bout of insomnia (do I sense a theme?), I wrote down all of the things that we have been doing towards our goal of living more simply and naturally. It included fun stuff like making our own deodorant and soap and cleaning supplies and basic but useful stuff like recycling old tshirts into rags and using cloth napkins. I felt really proud once I realized how many of these things have become part of our daily routines.

Speaking of daily routines, Sammy has found a new favorite napping spot… the hamper. He seems to prefer it when it is filled with the smelliest boy socks.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.26.05 AM.png

And then there’s Charlie. This is his favorite place these days, sitting and watching the birds flutter by. I think he’s as excited about Spring returning as I am.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.29.46 AM.png

And as for me, I’ve been sketching…

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.33.01 AM

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.32.30 AM

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.34.58 AM

And stitching. I finally tackled frogging and re-stitching the ghoulish lady.
Remember all that fuss over her skin?

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.37.35 AM.png

So that about sums up the latest around here. What’s new in your world?

Back at it!

I was super cranky and wanted to stay in for New Year’s Eve but Tom wanted to go out, so I did my makeup and put on pleather pants and we went to a friend’s house. Don’t say that I never take one for the team.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.23.01 PM

On New Year’s Day, we headed to the beach house. The quiet and solitude was perfect after the busyness and overstimulation of the holidays and the city.

Sammy in the car. That dog knows how to work a scarf!

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 2.22.06 PM.png

Tom likes to get up super early and watch the sunrise. The boys and I prefer to stay in the warm comfort of our beds so he takes pictures of the sunrise to show us. It’s a win-win.

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 1.39.28 PMScreen Shot 2016-01-07 at 1.40.06 PM

The beach was relaxing. We went to the arcade, ate junk food, and did A LOT of walking. Good thing I got a new fitness tracker for Christmas, otherwise all of that walking would have been wasted! It doesn’t count unless you have proof.

Biggest took these terrific photos. I love the sun shining in the sky. If you believe in Spirit and the Universe and God and that stuff, that’s what it reminds me of.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.27.05 PM

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.27.39 PM

At long last, we finally went home… HOME(!)… i.e. the best place on Earth. I jumped right into a fit of domesticity, making elderberry syrup…

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.19.27 PM.png

And deodorant bars (I know… same boring mold shape for EVERYTHING. Snore.)

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.23.01 PMScreen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.23.30 PM

Littlest decided that he wanted to write his life story. He worked really hard on it.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.01 PM

My favorite is Chapter 2.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.25 PMScreen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.34 PM

There were sad parts too.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.44 PM

But overall it’s been a pretty good 9 years.

And finally, in unbelievable stitching news, this one came back out!

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 2.09.50 PM.png

It feels good to be stitching again. Here’s to more stitching in 2016!

Life

What a weekend!

Biggest went to see the new Hunger Games movie with some of his friends on Friday night and didn’t get home until after 10:30pm! This gave us a glimpse of the future teenage years and I DID NOT like it at all!

On Saturday, we took the train into the city for a Scout trip at the Franklin Institute. Did you know that a canary has a really fast heartbeat?

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.19.23 AM

I love the pendulum that swings in the main staircase.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.15.39 AM

And, of course, the giant heart. Who doesn’t love the giant heart?

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.18.07 AM

Afterward, we rushed home for the big soccer tournament. It was pretty exciting. Our team didn’t win, but I was super proud of the boys for playing really hard.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.21.50 AM

The best part of the weekend, though, was when we lit our first fire of the season, had a picnic dinner on the living room floor, and played Life.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.25.01 AM.png

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.26.17 AM

Sammy snuggled in to watch.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.26.29 AM

Charlie insisted on being the banker. (He’s very good with money.)

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.26.41 AM

There is just something so wonderful about a fire in the fireplace and all my peeps at home. I feel so cozy and thankful and happy in moments like these.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.23.44 AM.png

Later on, the fire died out, the kids were tucked in bed, and we were left with sleepy animals and our books. It was an introvert’s dream come true.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.33.41 AM.png

Sunday was a long cold day. Littlest and I somehow ended up at home by ourselves. He was bored so we looked up science experiments on the internet. Who knew that Borax could be so entertaining?

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.36.25 AM

Scientist hard at work.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.36.41 AM

A homemade lava lamp!

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.36.57 AM

In other news, Charlie showed his displeasure at wearing a coat.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.39.33 AM

And I did a little stitching on Day 4!

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.41.48 AM.png

Have a great week!

First Day

It’s hard to believe that another Summer has come and gone.

The boys had their first day of school yesterday, so I took the obligatory first day of school photos. I think that this picture really shows their difference in personalities. 3rd and 5th grade!

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.24.59 AM

I was so excited to get home and hear about their days. Me: How was your day!?? Was it fun?? Did you like your teachers?!! Who’s in your class??!! Them: Eh… good.

Boys! After some prodding, I did eventually get the scoop. The teachers were nice. They have friends in their classes. The bus ride was fun. They liked the fancy sandwiches that I packed for lunch (grilled pesto chicken on french baguette… Let’s see how long I last before it goes back to salami on grocery store white bread).

Around here…

I was a lucky duck and got to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I made two batches of soap!

Oatmeal & Brown Sugar and Castile Soap with Lemongrass

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.28.27 AM

I’m digging the Oatmeal soap. The Castile soap seems too crumbly. Hopefully it will improve as it cures.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.29.55 AM

In an unprecedented turn of events, Charlie was discovered sleeping in his own bed. The one that was bought specifically for him when he first came home. The one that he has never even given a second glance. Go figure.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.20.26 AM

Last night, Tom had to run an errand after dinner. This is what the animals do until his safe return. Our animals are so funny.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.35.00 AM

After a long hiatus, I FINALLY had time to stitch! I made a little nest for myself outside while the boys entertained themselves with the hose and buckets of water.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.46.09 AM

It was like rediscovering an old friend.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.49.04 AM

I made some progress.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.50.10 AM

Of course, Charlie had to get into the act.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.57.33 AM

Some things never change.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 9.51.35 AM

Colonial Daze

Hi Friends! How are things?

We really enjoyed Williamsburg. I was pretty lazy about taking photos, so here is a random selection:

I think everyone who goes to Williamsburg has a picture like this. Littlest perfected his tortured look.

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.01.13 AM

Everything is so symmetrical! Squeeee!!! This house looks like it’s straight off of a cross stitch sampler.

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.10.28 AM

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.04.06 AM

It is nearly impossible to get a photo of everyone smiling. When did these boys get so tall?!!!

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.02.50 AM

We all loved the ghost tour and I looooooved the house tours. It’s so interesting to hear how people lived back then.

Our tour guide was so cute. She was very enthusiastic!

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.07.56 AM

One house had cool needlework.

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.08.28 AM

And check it out! The chair! The wallpaper! And do you see the embroidery hoop?!!! I want to go back in time and be a colonial woman!

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.11.11 AM

Speaking of which, they had this event which I was BUMMED to miss.

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 8.59.53 AM

And, hellooooo…

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.09.49 AM

Aren’t these dresses great? I refrained from buying one though, as the boys would have been mortified for sure.

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.07.34 AM

But that didn’t stop me from trying on a bonnet. Here I am nonchalantly pretending to read Poor Richard’s Almanac.Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.06.55 AM

The boys only had so much patience for Colonial Williamsburg, so we broke it up with visits to Busch Gardens…

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.12.27 AM Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.13.15 AM

And Water Country USA. The waterpark was hands down their favorite part of the trip.

Of course it is always so great to get back home. We had a whole weekend to (slowly) catch up.

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.18.21 AM

I think that the animals missed us.

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.18.57 AM

Charlie hasn’t left my side (I’m OK with that).

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.19.42 AM  Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.20.06 AM

Another day… Another post.

Hi Blog. Happy Monday (not!).

We had a delightful weekend. Weekends are the best.

These came out of the garden.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.33.47 PM

They might not look like much to you, but they are a pretty big deal. We are not such green thumbs around here.

I got this book, which I am looking forward to reading. Introverts unite!

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.35.28 PM

I let the boys do a little redecorating, which I am beginning to regret. This is one of their formerly cute shelves. It used to hold vintage children’s books and fire engines now THIS… sigh… boys.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.37.04 PM

Proof that Coal might >gasp< LIKE Sammy (a little).

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.40.15 PM

Proof that Charlie is the softest, cuddliest, fattest cat in all the land.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.42.05 PM

I made this Icebox Strawberry Cake from Pinterest. Fresh whipped cream… happy sigh. It was worth it.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.43.25 PM

Lest you think that I’ve abandoned my one true love, I haven’t.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.44.58 PM

See the creepy lady that is beginning to emerge? There is a little problem. My linen is lighter than the linen that they recommended, so her skin color may not show up. Should I go even paler for her skin so that she is even creepier and ghostlier?

The boys got tired of the “8 Ball Club” upstairs, so they set up the “Hip Hop Club” in the basement. Tom and I were quick to dismantle it because geeeze it was the only quiet kid free area left in the house!

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.48.03 PM

I practiced the piano, using a new online course.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.50.45 PM

And Charlie discovered the dryer.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 12.52.36 PM

How was your weekend?

Here we go again.

First things first… WE HAVE SOAP!

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.34.06 AM

Soap making is totes fun and exciting. I am dying to try a few more batches and flavor combinations!

In other news, I went out to dinner on Monday with Stephanie and came home with a…

WEAVING LOOM!

Oops. Funny how that works. Stephanie was kind enough to lend me her Cricket Loom, so of course I had to try it out tonight. See how productive I am when the boys are away at camp?

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.38.06 AM

The initial set up was a bit of a PITA,

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.40.01 AM

But once I got going, it was kinda fun.

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.41.09 AM

I learned how to set up the loom and weave by watching YouTube. What can’t you learn on YouTube? It took about 3 hours to weave a little scarf.

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.43.01 AM

By “little”, I mean dog-sized.

Behold my ever patient model, Coal.

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.45.29 AM

Looking off into the distance all nonchalant and model-like.

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.46.54 AM

This is his “I’m a serious high fashion model” pose.

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.51.03 AM

This is his “spying Tom with his after-modeling treat” pose.

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 8.48.33 AM

So marks my first foray into weaving.

Pros:

  • kinda fun
  • super fast
  • better than crocheting (my fingers don’t cooperate with crocheting)

Cons:

  • a pain to set up
  • takes up a lot of space
  • Charlie kept getting into the yarn, so I had to lock him in our room and he got mad and… PEED ON THE BED! OMG! HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! (That might have been enough to end my weaving career.)

Did I forget something?

Today is a pretty good day. Why? Because it’s the last day of work before Thanksgiving vacation.

Tomorrow I have a gynecologist appointment and it doesn’t even bother me, because… vacation!

I am starting to get in a Christmas-y mood. We refuse to get a tree before Thanksgiving, but this weekend I did drag out an animatronic Santa that Tom and I found in a house that we bought. Biggest thinks that he’s creepy but Littlest thinks that he’s cool. I think that he’s a little bit of both.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 12.42.06 PM

It was really cold but really sunny so we spent a lot of time outside. The boys and their friends discovered how fun it is to jump on a trampoline full of leaves.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 12.44.51 PM

It was all fun and games until Sammy went missing. We walked all over looking for him. You would think that a tiny black dog in a red sweater would be hard to miss, but no one had seen him. The positive was that we met two new neighbors. The negative was that we were really upset and worried. It turned out OK because we eventually found him. Can you guess where?

INSIDE THE HOUSE! Under a blanket by the heater vent! Sammy!!!

I guess I don’t blame him though. Inside was pretty cozy.

We lit our first fires of the season and I made a batch of these Homemade Shower Soothers. They smelled really good. I put extra Rosemary in ours because Rosemary is supposed to be good for memory and mental clarity and some people in our house are very forgetful. I’ll let you know if they work.
