Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Around here…

Tom and I have been taking turns being sick.

The two older guys (Tom and Biggest) went to the beach house to go crabbing. Biggest caught 2 blue crabs and proudly cooked them.

Littlest and I went to the roller rink (old pic from last Summer, also known as my roller queen days)

And prepared a fondue feast for Tom and Biggest’s return home.

Sunday was cold and rainy, so…

I baked Pesto bread (which got weirdly tall), but tasted delicious.

Tom hung our new (old) lucky horseshoes above the doors.

Littlest sat at the top of the stairs creating comic book characters.

Biggest disappeared into his room (Preteen! No photos!)

Sammy did what Sammy does best.

What did you do this weekend?

Breaking Bread

Hello Blog!

I went to the library during lunch last week and got a book on baking bread.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.42.43 PM.png

Of course, that meant there was bread baking this weekend. The results were ok. I don’t know what the problem is, but my bread always seems just “ok”, never “stellar.” You know how sometimes you eat a piece of bread and there’s not even butter or anything on it, but it still tastes so amazing and delicious? Crispy on the outside but soft and a little chewy on the inside and just the right ratio of crust to center? That isn’t my bread. Does anyone have tips, or better yet, a secret family recipe to share? Sigh… dreams.

I was cleaning on Saturday and came across my little loom from the weaving class that Stephanie and I took. I had no choice but to weave a few lines before putting it away. I just played around with trying to keep the lines even. It needs work.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.37.27 PM.png

Littlest is starting roller hockey this week. It’s his first year, so in addition to learning the rules of hockey, he also has to learn how to roller blade! I am pretty impressed with how fast he got the hang of it.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.35.37 PM.png

Yesterday, he asked me if I could practice with him, so I unearthed my dusty roller blades from the garage and strapped them on for the first time in 15 (gasp!) years. I’m not sure what I’m doing in this picture, but the smile is masking the terror I feel inside.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.36.48 PM.png

Tom and I are watching the final season of Mad Men on Netflix (I know, we are hopelessly years behind on current pop culture). Binge watching a season means lots of cross stitching time.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.38.16 PM.png

I finally finished the black part on creepy lady’s skirt. Wheeee! I’m on fire!

Happy Monday! Did you have a fun weekend?

Snow Day

Instead of getting the nice weather that the weatherman promised, we got more snow! It started to fall early Thursday morning and fell and fell and fell.

School was cancelled and the roads were a disaster so I stayed home from work. As much as I’m tired of Winter, an unexpected day off is always a treat. It’s as if we have no choice but to slow down and enjoy all of those at-home cozy activities.

There was a lot of snow.

One of these years we will remember to put the lawn furniture away before Winter.

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.06.40 PM

The kitchen was a mess because I was pretty much in it the entire day (my favorite place to be!).

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.09.46 PM

There were muffins to make…

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.11.24 PM

And eat! Here is Charlie scheming how to get one for himself.

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.16.50 PM

And bread to bake

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.12.49 PM

There is something so satisfying about having pans of fresh rolls rising on the stove (mismatched linens for bonus points).

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.14.08 PM

I tried a new bean prepping technique (in the crockpot!) and it worked like a dream!

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.18.16 PM

And made spaghetti sauce (no pics… oh well).

Of course there was some drawing.

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.20.08 PM

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 2.22.05 PM

And maybe a little stitching.

Until someone wanted to get into the act.

YAY for snow days!

My Valentines Day Extravaganza

I had such a nice Valentines Day.

I got spoiled with flowers…

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 11.34.28 AM

and homemade cards (those are the best kind).

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 11.33.59 AM

When the boys and I looked through old pictures recently, I realized that there were barely any of me. I asked Tom to try to take more of me even though I hate getting my picture taken. Here I am with my giant bouquet.

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 11.34.44 AM

We spent Valentines night eating pizza with the boys and rehydrating the Water Kefir that arrived… I was so excited!

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 11.33.11 AM

This is what they looked like after we put them into water. I know they look gross, but assure you that they will eventually taste delicious!

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 11.33.38 AM

We’ve named our kefir “Kefir Sutherland.” The first thing I do every morning is run downstairs to check on Kefir Sutherland. This morning, I forgot that I had moved him last night to a warmer location and panicked that he was missing.

The other creature in our house who likes warm locations is Sammy. He has a knack for locating sunny spots.

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 11.31.33 AM

On Saturday, Tom and I left for a little getaway to the beach. I didn’t take ANY pictures, well, except for one of the Sourdough loaf that I made. Like Kefir Sutherland, our sourdough also has a name… SourJoe. I carried SourJoe the entire way to the beach in my lap. If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is! This loaf had a good sour flavor and a crunchy crust, but was still too dense in the center… definitely some room for improvement.

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 11.34.14 AM

We went to a Valentine Musical. It was really good. I am always amazed by people with musical talent, because I have none.

On Sunday, Tom installed a new thermostat at the beach that he can control from his phone from anywhere! How cool is that?! We might as well be the Jetsons!

While he worked on the thermostat, I laid on the sofa and watched 5 HOURS(!) of TV. Can you even imagine that?! I was a lazy slug. Then I only got up to GO SHOPPING! I might as well be a Kardashian!

I never get a chance to stroll the shops in town without boys hanging off of me and whining to leave, so it was nice to walk around on my own. I bought Biggest a dreamcatcher that he’s been wanting and I bought myself a big fluffy scarf because it was cold. I even tried on some swimsuits in anticipation of Spring Break in Florida, but that just ended up being depressing.

Hope that you all had fun with your sweethearts this weekend.

Don’t you just love Morticia & Gomez? It doesn’t get any better than that.

Love & TNT & Stuff

Hi Friends!

Valentines Day is right around the corner. I love Valentines Day! This year, we are going to go to the beach house for the weekend. Tom wants to do some house projects there and we have tickets to see a musical. I am looking forward to getting the Early Bird Special at our favorite seafood place. I am a cheap date.

The boys were all like “Ick… Valentines Day is for girls!” when I asked them what kind of cards they wanted to get for their classmates. They changed their tune however when I showed them my friend Linh’s brilliant idea. Last night, we worked on assembling ours.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 10.20.38 AM

If you have a child, you undoubtedly recognize these. If you don’t, they are Minecraft dynamites (really Hershey’s Minis). Thanks Linh!

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 10.21.16 AM

In other news… It’s ALIVE! See all of the creepy bubbles?

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 10.24.20 AM

I attempted my first loaf of sourdough last night and wasn’t super happy with the results.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 10.26.46 AM

Lumpy unattractive crust, burnt bottom, and too-dense center. I will not give up. Sourdough… I’ll figure you out yet!

And then there’s this.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 10.28.51 AM

Blergh! This flower has been bothering me the whole time. It wasn’t laying flat (maybe because my stitches weren’t even?). Probably not noticeable to anyone but me, but you stitchers out there know how it is.

That’s my latest! Hope you are having a great week! (Another 10-12″ of snow predicted for tomorrow. Ugh. Kill me now.)

Winter 2014, otherwise known as the Winter of Ice, Sourdough & Fears.

We are slowly digging ourselves out from the ice and getting back to normal life. The boys returned to school today for the first time in what seems like forever!

The weekend was super busy with a million things like re-stocking the fridge, cooking, cleaning, and transporting the boys to activities where they could burn up some of their pent-up energy. All of the parents that I ran into looked similarly exhausted from the week. What a Winter this has been. I am trying to remain positive by thinking that under the snow and ice, the buds are quietly unfurling and preparing themselves to come to life. Spring is right around the corner! (If I say it enough times, maybe I will believe it.)

My sourdough starter arrived and sat in my office mailbox a few days before I remembered to look for it. I spent the weekend feeding it and hoping that it could be saved. This morning, we finally got some bubbling and signs of life. Yippie! I can’t wait to start experimenting with it. Hooray for Sourdough Bread!

We decided this weekend that we would all pick a fear and face it. Littlest decided that he would try any vegetable that is put on his plate. Biggest agreed to talk to one new person a week. Tom is going to use a calendar and plan things out ahead of time. As for me… well, I am going to face my biggest fear, which is what we refer to in our house as “the W word”. I can’t even type it, but it is a creature that is long and slimy and comes out when it rains. Gah! I think I got the hardest one.

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 9.08.19 AM

Random musings of late.

Since I’m sure that you all are waiting with baited breath for the results… I (once again) won the “Most Likely to Cause Gas” category of the Chili Cook-Off. My prize was a whoopee cushion which Littlest quickly claimed as his own.

It is still brutally cold, which is not new news. We just bought plane tickets to Florida for Spring Break. I am not usually a fan of Florida, but it is sounding better and better.

Yesterday I order this sourdough starter. I am so excited to give sourdough a whirl. It gives me a weird thrill to grow it like some science project.

This is such a random post.

We have been enjoying my tea experimentations lately. My current favorite night time mixture is Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and Mugwort. I call it my “Dream Tea.” I like it with a little honey (Sage, that I made) and a big Honey (Tom, who drinks it with me). I also like straight up Rosemary tea with some Agave Nectar for a touch of sweet. Yum.

Work is killing me. It is good (I guess) because it is busy and I feel useful, but bad because I feel stressed about it. It’s currently occupying too much brain space.

Here’s the latest on my stitching…

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 9.08.47 AM

I like the blends.

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 9.12.29 AM

And the little details.

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 9.13.07 AM

Christmas Countdown.

Everyone was supposed to come over for a big family dinner on Saturday, but we had to cancel it because another snow storm was expected. I would’ve liked to see everyone, but I was (secretly) happy that I got out of cooking a big family dinner.

Instead, I spent Saturday “in a mood.” I was particularly hormonal and particularly insufferable. Poor Tom was patient with me and even went out in the storm to buy me a Diet Coke. Is that love or what?

After the Diet Coke satiated the monster inside me, we sat on the couch and watched our new favorite show, Alaska the Last Frontier, and I stitched.

Screen shot 2013-12-16 at 9.19.02 AM

I made some good progress.

Screen shot 2013-12-16 at 9.20.25 AM

On Sunday, I woke up before 5am feeling especially productive. I snuck downstairs and made bread dough, baked a cake, made cinnamon rolls, made homemade chicken stock, started my tomato sauce on the stove, and made a quiche… all before 9am.

The day was busy and flew by. Santa visited the neighborhood via firetruck and the boys refused to say hi to him, even when I (desperate for a photo) made comments like, “I hope that Santa doesn’t think that you have bad manners and decide to not bring any presents.”

Screen shot 2013-12-16 at 9.23.58 AM

I made Jambalaya for dinner and we ate it with freshly baked bread. I dare say that my bread baking is improving.

Screen shot 2013-12-16 at 9.27.05 AM

This was dessert. Clearly, someone (me) is PMSing.

Screen shot 2013-12-16 at 9.30.05 AM

Here’s to the final week before Christmas! Who’s ready?!

Here we are again.

I have been in a horrific mood lately. I feel like how Max looks at the beginning of Where the Wild Things Are.

Screen shot 2013-10-07 at 8.20.25 AM

I went clothes shopping on Saturday. Clothes shopping is the worst when you’ve put on weight. So depressing.

Tom felt really sick all weekend, so we made a fine pair. Me- cranky. Him- sick.

On Sunday, Stephanie and I went to an arts festival. It was fun, but I was hot (See? More cranky). I did buy a cute old crewelwork piece. I’ll eventually take a picture for you.

The highlight (besides getting to hang out with Steph!) was THIS:

Harry Potter!

Screen shot 2013-10-07 at 8.43.26 AM

Isn’t he a shoe-in? I like that he is holding his wand out as if in mid-spell for our photo.

Last night, I made sweet potato rolls to go with dinner. We are a carb-loving family, so I thought these would be a nice treat. I put the dough in the oven to rise and went about my business. Unfortunately, that business included forgetting about the dough and preheating the oven to start roasting the chicken. Seriously?! I forgot all about the dough until I smelled the towel (that was covering it) burning. Yikes!

The dough was kinda salvaged, but it lost its luster after almost setting the kitchen on fire.

And now it’s Monday. I am leaving for NY in a few hours. This is going to be a LOOOOOOOONG week.

Thank God It’s… MONDAY?!

You don’t often hear me getting excited about Monday, but today I am! Vacation Mondays are totally different from Work Mondays!

We have been having a good time at the beach. Yesterday, I got up sooooooper early and made bread and sat out on the front porch stitching while it baked. This is the second loaf I’ve attempted. It was tasty, but still not quite right. Baking is hard!

front beach

We spent most of yesterday on the beach. It was fun, but very crowded. It seemed like every single kid had their boogie board with them, so each time a wave came in, you had to run really fast in order to avoid being hit by a bunch of short humans on styrofoam. I finally gave in and got on a boogie board too. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

Tom had to go back home this morning for a few days of work, so the boys and I are on our own until he gets back. Right now they are bombarding me with “MOMMY LET’S GO TO THE BEACH! CAN WE RIDE BIKES? I WANT TO GO TO THE BOARDWALK! LET’S PLAY TENNIS! WHEN CAN WE GO TO THE ARCAAAADE?” I guess that’s my cue to get off the computer.

Happy Monday, Stitchy Friends!
