Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Around Here

Hi Blog!

I’m getting bored with these trip posts, so today let’s take a break to talk about what’s been going on around here lately.

Are you as happy as I am that Fall has arrived? It’s still hot in Pennsylvania, but there’s that bit of crispness in the air to show that the seasons are changing. Yay!

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-12-58-30-pm

I am feeling especially thankful these days to be back into our school and home routines. I do love me some routines! Taurus much?

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-12-59-51-pm

Soccer season is in full swing so our Saturday mornings are spent on the field. The weather has been perfect for this so I can’t complain. The boys have been playing hard and I love to watch them.

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-11-12-13-am

In addition to Soccer, they both signed up for a running program that culminates in a 5k. Littlest said that he wanted us to run the 5k as a family. I foolishly agreed. This week, I broke out my super fashionable knee brace and 80s music mix and restarted the Couch to 5k training. Mom guilt sure makes you do some crazy things!

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-12-57-40-pm

I really fell off the gluten free train while we were away and it’s been soooooooo hard to get back on. Every day I start strong, then stuff like this happens…

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-12-56-53-pm

I know at some point I really need to commit to the diet again, but WHY IS GLUTEN SO DELICIOUS?!?!!!

Speaking of delicious, the boys and I continued our Saturday dinner tradition with an Asian inspired evening of Dumplings, Soy & Ginger Glazed Cornish Game Hen with Bok Choy and Shitake Mushrooms, and Mango Sorbet. Yum. They are seriously upping their game.

And in stitching news… I’m discussing Halloween stitching in the October issue of CrossStitcher magazine, available on newsstands now (Haha. I’ve always wanted to say that)! It feels these days like I write about cross stitching more than I actually cross stitch, but blergh… such is the life of a working mother.

Happy Friday, Friends!

Behind the Scenes

We currently have house guests and hosted a family dinner party for 17 last weekend. I am so frazzled and have been averaging 2-3 hours of sleep per night for the past few days. If I can just make it though this week (which includes two work trips) and Littlest’s birthday sleepover on Friday, it will be time for me and Tom to jet away to gay Par-ee! Keeping my eye on the prize!

Tom snapped some photos of me taking photos for my next CrossStitcher article. Lest you think I know anything about photography, I’m keeping it real here on le blog by showing these behind-the-scenes pics.

How you do it when you’re a shorty and use a door mat as a fancy backdrop. Paula, can you spot the cute polka dot bag that you sent to me?

Sometimes getting a good shot means that you have to sit in the bushes. This is hardcore photojournalism in action!

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 3.39.56 PM

In other news…

Charlie routinely turns his nose up at his fancy cat beds, but has claimed an old potato chip box as his favorite hangout.

Me and Littlest eye-balling the Carrot cake even though we have a perfectly good Chocolate cake in front of us.

Happy Monday, stitchy friends!

Model Behavior

I have been a little neglectful of my blog lately. I miss you so! It’s been a whirlwind since returning from vacation.

I got a promotion at work! It is all very exciting (and a little overwhelming).

The boys started camp and come home sweaty and pooped each day.

Littlest and I got into the Pokemon Go craze. He’s interested in finding Pokemon and I’m more interested in posing with them for funny pictures.

Screen Shot 2016-07-14 at 6.17.23 PM

I have now been gluten free for 2 months! It feels pretty good!

I worked on my second little article for CrossStitcher magazine. I wanted to take some photos to go with it and asked Tom to be a stand-in while I set up the camera. Here are my favorite out-takes.

Of course, Charlie had to get in on the action.

Blue Steel…

I think he could have a successful career as a cross stitch model! (Thanks for being such a good sport, QT!)

Happy Thursday!

All in a day’s work

Helloooooo Friday!

Yesterday the boys came to work with me for Take Your Child to Work Day.  We have a big art department, so they got to spend their day sculpting and painting and creating various works of art.

Screen Shot 2016-04-29 at 12.41.18 PM.png

When I stopped in to check on them, my little joker was eager to show me his sculpture of a poop emoji. #proudmommoment

Screen Shot 2016-04-29 at 12.38.08 PM.png

It was a little sad to go into the office today without my little buddies, especially since they left behind reminders of their visit such as:

a portrait of Charlie on my drawing table

and a little polaroid to remember them by.

Have a great weekend!

Bonjour mes amis!

Hi Friends!

I am back from Paris! I have so much to tell you!

The Northeast was hit with a big blizzard while I was away.

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 3.10.39 PM.png

Part of me was happy to avoid it, but the other part was sad to get pics from home and know that I was missing the excitement and sledding and cozying up indoors that blizzards bring. Shoveling – no. Hot cocoa by the fire – yes.

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 3.13.01 PM.png

As much as I was dreading the trip, I ended up (kinda) enjoying it. For once, we ended up with some free time for a little sightseeing.

I bought a selfie stick at the Eiffel Tower. So américaine of me! It was worth the 5 euros for the amount of laughs we got. Here is a photo of me saying “How the heck do you work this thing?” while it was snapping away at us. Most of the pictures were some variation on this theme.

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 2.45.22 PM.png

The sightseeing was whirlwind.

Of course, there was the Eiffel Tower…

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 2.48.12 PM.png

And a million pretty buildings…

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 3.24.22 PM

And statues…

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 3.27.08 PM

And the Seine…

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 3.28.25 PM

We took a stroll down the Champs-Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe and huffed and puffed all the way to the top.

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 2.53.34 PM.png

I thought I would die, but OH MAN(!), it was worth it! The sun was setting when we reached the top and it was nothing short of spectacular.

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 2.56.59 PM.png

There’s that tower again…

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 2.58.10 PM.png

Everything lit up after the sun set. It was breathtaking. They don’t call it the City of Lights for nothing.

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 2.59.28 PM.png

View from the top (gulp… that’s a lot of stairs).

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 3.00.49 PM.png

We walked and walked and walked… over the river and past the palaces and down the quais. It was quite an unexpected adventure for a country mouse like me.

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 3.07.13 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 3.03.50 PM.png

I logged 29,469 steps on my fitness tracker in one day, which has to be some kind of record! It made up for all of the cheese and wine and crepes. Maybe.

As fun as it was, it is sooooooo great to finally be home. Yay HOME! My bed! My cat! My boys! My Tom! My strange routines!

By the way, someone got a hold of my selfie stick and it’s his new favorite thing. As you can see, our technique still leaves some room for improvement.

Cupcakes, Cats, & Cross stitch

Hi Blog.

I leave for Paris tomorrow. I realize it’s totally obnoxious to say, but I am dreading this trip big time. I get very anxious about traveling and being away from my family. It’s the worst.

We had such a great few days though. I will write a post and read it when I am homesick.

I have been keeping up with the Couch to 5K training, even though it’s not quite as fun anymore. On Saturday, the boys wanted to go to the playground, so I ran around the school while they played. It is much harder to run outside vs. on a treadmill!

Littlest practiced skateboarding while I ran. He has been determined to get good enough to go to the skatepark with the older kids. I admire his determination!

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.25.57 AM.png

It was a busy few days with indoor soccer and playdates and work. We were happy to stay home for a game night. Bingo!

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.43.14 AM.png

Of course, you know who got into the action.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.44.02 AM.png

In other news, we finally got our first little bit of snow!

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.45.12 AM

Littlest got a snowboard for Christmas. He is dying to use it and has been trying all kinds of tricks to make it snow; including the snow dance (point your forefingers up like you’re saying #1 and dance), sleeping with a spoon under your pillow, and putting your clothes in the bathtub at night. Unfortunately, the snow wasn’t enough for actual snow boarding but the forecast is calling for a possible blizzard this weekend. His techniques may be working!

The boys have really been into that show “Cupcake Wars” on Netflix. On Monday we decided to have our own Cupcake War. I baked up a batch of cupcakes and they worked to develop flavors and decoration.

It was so much fun and I couldn’t believe how focused and creative they were.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.49.13 AM

We had flavors such as S’mores, Peanut Butter & Banana, Apple & Maple, and Tropical Coconut.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.50.19 AM

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.50.46 AM

I thought that the results were quite beautiful.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.53.57 AM.png

Biggest’s work:

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.54.40 AM

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.52.34 AM

And Littlest’s:

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.55.41 AM

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.53.13 AM

Of course, they deserted me when it was time to clean up the kitchen (but it was worth it).

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.57.03 AM.png

After the exhausting Cupcake Wars, we enjoyed some down time on the couch watching YouTube videos and cross stitching. I just noticed that we were watching cat videos while our cat was watching us!

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 8.58.14 AM

Someday I will learn to take better photos, but that someday isn’t today.

Happy Wednesday, Friends!

Help!

Work and life stuff have been crazy which means very little time for fun things… like blogging and stitching and lying around for hours mindlessly scrolling though Pinterest. Le sigh. What’s a girl to do?

This week I had to commute two days to NYC in the rain [equal parts boring (long train rides with dead cell phone battery) and stressful (meetings with angry people)], get a mammogram, AND go for my annual exam (if you know what I mean). It that isn’t the trifecta of an icky week, I don’t know what is. But enough complaining, let’s catch up on the fun stuff!

Thanksgiving was delicious. Tom’s parents do all of the hosting and cooking, so we just show up and eat. I used to mind this because I love hosting events, but have come to appreciate the benefits of this arrangement!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.42.52 PM

Our elf on the shelf returned from the North Pole on Thanksgiving night.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.44.37 PM

The boys were pretty excited, but Sammy wasn’t so impressed with his arrival.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.45.28 PM

We spent a few days at the beach house. The weather was unseasonably warm and sunny.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.47.13 PM

We discovered this new-fangled version of Pac-Man on the boardwalk. Not to brag or anything, but I was kind of a Ms. Pac-Man legend in the day. Isn’t it funny that when people say “not to brag,” they are totally bragging. But since I’m already bragging, I will tell you that I once had the high score on TWO separate Ms. Pac-Man machines at the same time on the boardwalk. Does that make me cooler in your eyes?

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.48.22 PM.png

Tom made me DO WORK while we were away, so I took this picture to show how totally hardworking and techie I am (nothing could be further from the truth) with two computers going at once!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.55.20 PM.png

We made it out for dinner one night at our favorite shore spot. We always go for the Early Bird special and I always “pretend” that I don’t realize there is an Early Bird special when the waiter tells us about it.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.57.12 PM

When we got home, Littlest was determined to learn how to skate board.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.59.49 PM.png

I didn’t stitch at all, which gave Charlie ample opportunity to really get comfortable in my stitching basket.

First he just sat in it.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.01.08 PM

Then he napped in it.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.01.21 PM

Then he cleaned his you-know-what in it. UGH! CHARLIE!!!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.01.42 PM

We had a strange bird meeting on our patio. There were more birds, but I couldn’t get them all in the picture. So weird, right? Can someone who knows more about birds than I do, tell me what they are doing?

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.05.12 PM.png

And, oh happy day(!), I found some cool cross stitch stuff at the thrift store.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.08.33 PM.png

What’s new with you? Happy Thursday!

The Basics

Helloooo Friday!

Usually I want life to slow down, but this week I’m glad that it sped up! Wahooooo! It’s Friday!!!

Next week is a big launch-to-do-of sorts at work so stress is high and tempers are flaring. My response is to close my office door and hide behind a giant computer screen. It works for the most part except when people look in the little window next to the door and do the “can I come in” mime and then come in anyway. What is up with that?!

Tom is finally feeling better. Praise the gods! I hope I didn’t just jinx things by saying that.

Random fun fact: In his heyday, Tom was invited to try out for the Phillies(!!!). For various reasons, he didn’t end up with a glamorous career in professional sports. I am glad because 1. We never would have met, and 2. He wouldn’t be spending his evenings playing baseball in the backyard with these 2 rascals. And seriously, is there anything cuter than that?

Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 12.33.00 PM

Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 12.37.53 PM

This weekend promises to be filled with kid stuff (appointments, scouts, inaugural outdoors (poo) club meeting) but I’m hoping to find some time for Halloweening (apple picking, pumpkin patch, important costume discussions). A mother’s work is never done!

Last night, I lit not one, but TWO, vanilla candles and the house smelled so homey and bakey and yummy. I realize this is Pumpkin Spice and/or Cinnamon candle season, but sometimes you just have to go with the basics.

Enjoy your weekend!

Cat & Mouse

Work has been a doozy. On weeks like these, the “quit my job and move to a farm in the middle of nowhere and homeschool the kids” fantasies come in full force.

Thank goodness that we have a 3 day weekend to look forward to. I plan to get the house in tip top shape for the start of school next week; organized, food prepped, clothes washed… YAY!

Now that Charlie has experienced Outside, he sneaks out every chance that he gets. We are getting more used to the idea since he stays close to the house and comes when called… but are not used to the presents that he’s been leaving. Our kitty boy is quite the mouser! I never doubted that Charlie would be a generous and capable provider, but do wish that he wasn’t so prolific.

Hopefully, word will get around the mouse community to stay away from this highly skilled assassin. Screen Shot 2015-09-04 at 9.20.00 AM

Happy Friday!

Hello!

Today is my birthday! It’s hard to believe that I’ve been writing on this blog for almost 3 1/2 years now. How time flies!

I was in North Carolina the past few days for work. When I lived in North Carolina many years ago, I wasn’t so wild about it, but can see the appeal now that I am older and yearning for a slow paced life. There was so much green space compared to Philadelphia. Maybe someday when the kids are all grown, we can move. Wonder if I’ll still be writing on this blog!

It was a busy trip, but there was time to stitch in the hotel and on the plane. I didn’t feel like packing a big project so I brought Modern Folk’s pretty little pattern “Let’s Be Kind.” It was the perfect size for a cramped plane ride and a perfect sentiment to remember when traveling and everyone in the airport is in a rush and cranky.

Hotel stitching (Note remote control that I didn’t have to share with anyone.)

Screen Shot 2015-05-01 at 10.28.00 AM

My favorite part of traveling is always coming home. It is the nicest feeling to walk through the door and be greeted with big smiles and hugs. I wouldn’t trade that for anything!
