Stitch Therapy

Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Category: home (Page 1 of 8)

Five Things.

1. I have recently become obsessed with houseplants. My favorites are Angelvines, which look so wild and tangled and spontaneous (everything I am not) and Chinese Money Plants. I didn’t know until I checked Le Google, but this is a popular plant for propagating and sharing with friends. Now if only I had some plant loving friends.

Angelvine in the front…

Chinese money plant… It’s so cute!

2. We got a new (used) piano and I had my first lesson this week. My favorite part about playing is that it requires full concentration and focus and I kinda get lost in it. It reminds me a little bit of cross stitch in that way. I am working on Let it Be by the Beatles, which is probably every beginning piano player’s first song. It is SO FUN!

Charlie disapproves of all the noise I make.

3. Tom and I finally splurged on a King sized bed. Now we no longer have to contort ourselves around Charlie and his bed hogging ways.

It feels rather luxurious!

4. We have house guests arriving this weekend who will be staying for a week!

No photo… Just imagine me frantically cleaning.

5. These are my latest reads. I suppose this is a pretty good representation of my current interests.

a little bit history + a little bit philosophy = a lot of nerd

Happy Almost Weekend! What’s new with you?

Things and Stuff

This blog has gotten boring or maybe I just feel uninspired these days.

The wallpaper stripping continues. Now we have moved onto Littlest’s room.

His goal is to transform his room from little kid to teen. Good bye, nice coordinated PB Kids furniture and bedding. Hello, LED lights and slick furniture. Ugh. I’m not sure that I can handle all of these changes.

While we were redecorating, I came upon Littlest’s Piglets.

When Littlest was littler, he was very attached to a stuffed Piglet. We did what good parents do and bought a backup Piglet just in case something should happen to Original Piglet. That plan backfired, however, when Littlest spotted Backup Piglet while in the presence of Original Piglet. He then insisted on carrying both Piglets at all times. Thus, Backup Piglet became Piglet 2.

I think this was Original Piglet. Gah! The binky days!

But enough of this trip down Memory Lane, in current news…

Tom and Biggest went to the beach and had quite a catch!

I appears that Charlie may be part cyborg.

I’ve been obsessed with Downton Abbey (I know… a million years late on this one). But can we discuss? Can Carson and Mrs. Hughes just marry and live happily ever after? Mr. Bates is nothing but trouble! Anna can do better! How annoying is Lady Grantham’s accent? I want a Mrs. Patmore in my life!

Hope that you had a great week! TGIF!

Long Lost Blogger

Hi Friends! Long time no talk!

Honestly, I’m not sure where to go with this blog. I love having a place to ramble on and record our family memories, but as the boys get older, it seems less OK to share their antics online. The things that I might find adorable as their Mother may seem mortifying to them as a tween and teen. Gah! Parenting is tricky. I guess I’ll just start writing and see how things evolve.

Anyhoo… Where did the last year and a half go? In that time, I have:

1. Barely been stitching (but have been feeling a bit of an itch to get started again)

I finally framed this…

and started this…

2. Moved into a new house (which we LOVE but required a change of schools which was HARD)

We have more space and a lot to garden, which is good and bad…

Tom’s favorite part is the long driveway which means he never has to talk to neighbors. My favorite part is the back patio and gazebo.

3. Got MARRIED (Yes, Tom finally made an honest woman of me after all of these years)!

I love him.

Family Forever.

4. And Charlie is great (I know you must be wondering).

How are you? What’s new? How’s life? Have you been stitching? Did you miss me? I missed you! It’s good to be back!

Around here…

Tom and I have been taking turns being sick.

The two older guys (Tom and Biggest) went to the beach house to go crabbing. Biggest caught 2 blue crabs and proudly cooked them.

Littlest and I went to the roller rink (old pic from last Summer, also known as my roller queen days)

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-05-53-pm

And prepared a fondue feast for Tom and Biggest’s return home.

Sunday was cold and rainy, so…

I baked Pesto bread (which got weirdly tall), but tasted delicious.

Tom hung our new (old) lucky horseshoes above the doors.

Littlest sat at the top of the stairs creating comic book characters.

Biggest disappeared into his room (Preteen! No photos!)

Sammy did what Sammy does best.

What did you do this weekend?

The Scoop

Hi Blog!

It is a busy time around here. We are getting ready to end Summer with a bang! My parents arrive this week for a long visit, we are gearing up for Littlest’s 10th (OMG!) birthday festivities, and Tom and I are preparing to leave for a trip to Paris! All fun things, but lots of prep involved for each. You know the drill!

Around here:

I have now been gluten free for over 3 months! Yay! Last week, I attempted making gluten free pizza at home. It got the thumbs up!

Instead of party planning and packing and all of the other stuff that needs to be done, I’ve been obsessively KonMari-ing the house. Have any of you tried the KonMari Method? It is strangely satisfying to fold underwear into cute little rectangles. Sometimes I open drawers just to admire them.

In stitching related news, I’ll be in the September issue of CrossStitcher magazine. It will hit newsstands this Friday! It’s been really fun to write these little articles.

Screen Shot 2016-08-16 at 1.03.54 PM

That’s the scoop. What’s new with you?

Hope

Here we are at the end of July already. I’ve been struggling with anxiety these days. It’s hard to avoid the bad news around us. Between the election drama and shootings and acts of terror, I worry all the time about the state of our world. Add to that the unrelenting noise of social media and the internet and negative opinions from angry people, I just can’t take it.

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 10.55.47 AM

Times like this, I find myself retreating to home and simple tasks. I got so much done over the weekend. I made broth, soup, squash bread, enchiladas, and grilled chicken so we have a full fridge and easy lunches for the week. I laundered and shopped and organized cabinets and closets. There’s nothing quite like good old fashioned hard work and a sense of accomplishment. Being productive is so satisfying!

And best of all, I finally picked my long neglected stitching.

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 10.59.14 AM

I’m working my way in from the right hand side now. Fingers crossed that the two sides will match up. You all know that moment when you hold your breath, right?

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 10.59.46 AM

We got a new board game called Googly Eyes. You have to draw things while wearing vision distorting glasses while your teammate tries to guess what you’re drawing. It is pretty fun (and funny looking).

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 10.56.56 AM

Tom assembled Littlest’s new bike. Littlest isn’t so little anymore. Time is moving fast.

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 11.02.24 AM

I guess we can’t control all of the craziness that’s going on out there, but we can choose to focus on the good and reflect happiness and change into our small part of the world. It’s not much, but maybe it makes a difference. We can only hope.

Happy Tuesday, Friends

Around Here

Hi Blog!

How do you follow up on a dramatic post about sewage? I don’t know… maybe a post about…

A car accident?!!

Yes, that would be little old me minding my own business on the way to work yesterday only to get caught up in a 3 car fender bender. Thankfully it was minor.

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 9.12.40 AM.png

But let’s talk about fun stuff.

This weekend was great. Things are pretty much getting back to normal at home. I have never appreciated plumbing so much. I spent Saturday and Sunday getting the house in order and catching up on fun stuff, such as:

… Baking ooey gooey chocolatey cookies with my boy.

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 8.52.07 AM.png

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 8.53.15 AM.png

… Making homemade deodorant. They’re miniature which is not on purpose! I totally screwed up and ordered the wrong size containers. They’re good for travel or if you have tiny armpits.

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 8.54.53 AM.png

… Making magnesium gummies!

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 8.58.31 AM.png

I once wrote about the benefits of Magnesium on my health and wellness blog (which lasted for all of about 5 posts). It helps with a million things such as anxiety (check!), depression (check!) and insomnia (CHECK!) and most people don’t get enough of it. Anyhoo… I followed a recipe from Pinterest and made these. Aren’t they so cute? And super tasty. I’ll let you know if they actually work.

… Watching a lot of hockey. Does it ever get easy to watch your kid get slammed against the fence or wipe out on skates? Thank goodness for padding.

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 9.05.22 AM.png

… Secretly Snapchatting Tom and using funny filters.

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 9.07.08 AM.png

… Catching Charlie hanging out with his stuffed pal.

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 9.10.10 AM.png

Good Times. What’s new with you?

A Simple Home

Hi Blog!

Where did this week go? Last night we had crazy thunderstorms. Thunder is kinda cool, but it keeps me up, which is not cool. Insomnia = baking.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.20.12 AM.png

Stephanie and I went to an antique place last weekend. I got this.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.18.30 AM.png

At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, but the sales ladies were staring me down as I was making my decision and it was only $14, which is something a bargain shopper like me could not resist. It’s growing on me now, but I feel like I am walking that fine line between decorating my house with “vintage character” and decorating my house “like a granny.”

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.28.16 AM.png

I also made a second batch of deodorant bars. So far, they are working really well. The true test will be when Summer comes. They will have their job cut out for them.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.21.39 AM.png

The other night, during a different bout of insomnia (do I sense a theme?), I wrote down all of the things that we have been doing towards our goal of living more simply and naturally. It included fun stuff like making our own deodorant and soap and cleaning supplies and basic but useful stuff like recycling old tshirts into rags and using cloth napkins. I felt really proud once I realized how many of these things have become part of our daily routines.

Speaking of daily routines, Sammy has found a new favorite napping spot… the hamper. He seems to prefer it when it is filled with the smelliest boy socks.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.26.05 AM.png

And then there’s Charlie. This is his favorite place these days, sitting and watching the birds flutter by. I think he’s as excited about Spring returning as I am.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.29.46 AM.png

And as for me, I’ve been sketching…

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.33.01 AM

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.32.30 AM

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.34.58 AM

And stitching. I finally tackled frogging and re-stitching the ghoulish lady.
Remember all that fuss over her skin?

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.37.35 AM.png

So that about sums up the latest around here. What’s new in your world?

Winter Home

Hi Blog!

It is sooooo cold out these days. It takes a lot of brain power and energy to keep everyone entertained on these long cooped-up Winter weekends.

I experimented with making Quinoa cookies.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.48.49 PM.png

There was a blind taste test to see if they could pick out the secret ingredient. Littlest guessed, “pepper.” Biggest guessed, “I have no idea, but did you bake any regular chocolate chip cookies?” Tom guessed, “A little weird, but I’ll still eat them.”

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 1.17.49 PM.png

We drew fake animal wounds on arms with liquid eyeliner and other old makeup from my drawer  (and then posed for pictures).

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.51.51 PM.png

I talked Littlest in having a sketching session with me, partially to force myself to draw too.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.53.22 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.55.01 PM

My copy of Down to Earth finally came and I read it from cover to cover. Le sigh… I want to run away from suburbia and raise chickens on a farm, except I don’t really like chickens and I suck at gardening.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.56.22 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.57.20 PM.png

Oh to be Charlie for a day…

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.58.17 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 12.59.25 PM.png

We had some nice quiet moments, petting animals…

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 1.00.42 PM.png

And cross stitching.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 1.01.40 PM.png

And some rowdy ones.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 1.03.18 PM

I love my little family.

Super Bowl and Super Babies!

In summary, we had a very social weekend and then I got sick. Boo.

But let’s rewind.

On Friday, my Biggest boy turned 11 years old. He was born the day before the Eagles played in the Super Bowl. I could care less about football, but if you live in Philadelphia, it was a big deal. All the babies in the nursery were dressed in Eagles green onesies and hats.  I am known for growing gigantuan babies, so my guy looked like a linebacker next to all of the other petite babies. I have to admit, he was pretty cute.

And now he’s 11! Unbelievable.

All of the family came over on Friday and we had a taco feast (his request). Per tradition, I was unable to take a decent photo to document the event.

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 9.36.45 AM.png

On Saturday, he had a sleepover party with his little buddies. They are getting to that age now where they just “hang out.” It seems so boring. I’m constantly like “don’t you want to play a game?” “Don’t you want to do an activity?” “Should we have silly string battle now?” I know I’m being an uncool mom, but that’s my job.

On Sunday, I started to feel really run down and sick, but there were things to do!

Like trying a new dish detergent recipe…

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 9.51.20 AM.png

And making split pea soup (in our house, we call it “Ham” soup because, god forbid, they realize that they are eating peas!) and a big pot of spaghetti sauce for the week…

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 9.50.50 AM.png

Then we worked on our state project on Alabama. How do you think he really feels about working on his state project?

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 9.51.06 AM.png

As the day progressed, my cold got worse and worse. By the time the Super Bowl came on, I was a tired snotty mess, so while everyone else was partying with beer and wings, I had NyQuil and was tucked into bed before the half time show came on. Thumbs up!

Happy Tuesday!
