Discovering me … one stitch at a time

A visit from the Christmas Chicken

Can you believe that it’s really 2017? Do you remember when the year 2000 seemed so futuristic and far away and here we are 17 years later!

How was your holiday? I never totally got rid of the grumps, but did manage to put on a happy face and hide them well enough as not to be a Debbie Downer.

Anyhoo, here’s what we did…

There is a story that gets told over and over about how when Tom and his brothers and cousins were younger, a giant costumed chicken would show up at various family functions. This year, Tom thought it would be funny if a chicken showed up on Christmas Eve instead of Santa.

Guess who he thought should be the chicken?

That would be none other than yours truly.

Thankfully, one of his brothers stepped in at the last minute and made a great Christmas chicken.

Santa showed up too. It was mayhem.

The boys pretty much got everything their little hearts desired on Christmas morning. So much for minimalism and simplicity.

I was off from work the week between Christmas and New Years. It was nice to hunker down and be lazy. We spent our time…

Coloring

Taking a long hike

Creating animations

I checked out two biographies from the library, one on Julia Child and the other on Catherine the Great. Culinary History Royal Nerd heaven!

We went to the beach house on Thursday and stayed through the New Year. Biggest was excited to test out the crab trap that he designed and built.

He caught 11 crabs and we made a delicious crab bisque!

We went to the Melting Pot for dinner one night which has inspired us to up our at-home fondue game in 2017. I can already tell that my diet is not going to go well.

We visited the cat rescue and pretty much wanted to take every cat home with us.

I was particularly fond of the three black cats on the windowsill. How cute are they?!

And worked on a big puzzle.

I say “we”, but really it was “me” who kinda got obsessed with it.

I spent New Years Eve in my jammies reading about Catherine the Great, which was GREAT. Some of us didn’t make it till midnight.

Happy 2017, Friends!

Countdown

Hi Blog.

T minus 4 days till Christmas. Eek!

Last weekend, we went to look at lights (an annual tradition)

and went to a party. It was fun, but I drank too much (hopefully not an annual tradition).

Littlest had a violin concert (kids + violins = cute!).

There are 3 more days of work until I am done for the rest of the year! That part is exciting!

I guess it’s time to start thinking about my word for 2017.

In the past it has been Simplify (2016), Believe (2015), and Connect (2014). I want to pick just the right one for this year.

Do you have a word for 2017?

Stuff I did

Hi Poor Neglected Blog!

Thanksgiving already seems long gone, but I hope that you all had wonderful celebrations with your friends and family.

Here’s what we have been up to:

We ran our first 5K as a family!

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-1-08-43-pm

It was really fun and I am so proud of everyone. The best part was the couples massage that Tom and I treated ourselves to the following day. If races=massages, then sign me up for more!

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-1-13-26-pm

I got some Halloween makeup kits on clearance intending to save them for next year, but someone was bored and wanted to try one. Is this creepy or what?

screen-shot-2016-11-23-at-3-52-29-pm

The weather has been crazy. Last weekend, we went from this during the day (in short sleeves)

screen-shot-2016-11-23-at-3-55-40-pm

to this at night (flurries and our first fire of the season!).

screen-shot-2016-11-29-at-3-49-58-pm

I tried my hand at crocheting again, but couldn’t remember how to “turn”, so here is my very long skinny “scarf.” Voila!

screen-shot-2016-11-23-at-3-54-31-pm

Tom found the perfect Christmas sweater (that cat!!!).

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-1-04-11-pm

Speaking of cats, this guy was 100% anti-cat before we got Charlie. I think that he’s grown on him.

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-1-06-50-pm

I mean, how could he not? Charlie is the BEST (ALL THE HEART EYES!) even when he drops a dead mouse right next to me (such as he did last week).

screen-shot-2016-11-29-at-3-45-42-pm

OH CHARLIE! Don’t ever change!

Tricks & Treats

Hi Blog! Another weekend has come and gone.

Saturday was windy and cold! Tom and Biggest went to the beach house to do some fishing and crabbing. Biggest has really caught the fishing bug! It’s great to see his enthusiasm.

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-33-24-pm

While they were away, Littlest and I spent some quality time together. We:

shopped for Halloween costumes,

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-27-19-pm

picked out Tom’s birthday presents (this Thursday! 45! Wheeee!),

made gluten free pumpkin muffins (yes, I’m back at it!),

did a little grocery shopping, where I managed to drop and shatter a glass bottle of tea tree oil in the checkout line at Whole Foods. Mortifying! Especially when people started to wrinkle their noses and say “What’s that smell?”

went on a gluten free pizza and frozen yogurt date,

and watched Zootopia while cross stitching!!!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-31-19-pm

On Sunday, we dragged the Halloween bins down from the attic, which led to hours of trying on old costumes and giggling hysterically. Here’s a random sampling of what we modeled:

Spock ears
Karate outfit
Cowboy/Cowgirl
Caveman/Cavegirl
Chinese dress
Red Riding Hood/Wolf
Monk with pug head
Wednesday Addams

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-28-05-pm

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-28-36-pm

The BEST part is that I found a costume that I made for Sammy when he was just a puppy. He wore it to a costume contest and won. He was even featured on the evening news! Sammy has put on some weight over the years (sigh… haven’t we all?) and it no longer fits, but Charlie was able to be squeezed into it! HA!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-29-18-pm

The WORST part is that it’s been a few years since I’ve worn some of these costumes too and could barely get them zipped up. Sammy, I feel your pain.

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-26-43-pm

Charlie, afterwards, obviously trying to forget the entire ordeal. Sorry, Charlie!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-30-09-pm

Happy Monday!

Memorial Day at the Beach (in pictures)

Hi Blog!

We just returned from a lovely 5 days at the beach. It was very relaxing.

Biggest has developed a real passion for fishing, so there was plenty of that.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.34.05 AM

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.35.16 AM

Fishing is just my kind of activity. How can you go wrong with sitting around looking at the water and eating corn chips?

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.36.19 AM

We also gave crabbing a go. Don’t ask me why I felt the need to point at the crabs in every picture.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.41.58 AM.png

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 10.16.13 AM.png

We are lucky to live on the bay, so Biggest could run back and forth to check the traps. He was very dedicated and even went in the early morning drizzles. He caught 17 crabs!

We rode our bikes a lot, which I loved. This is the best picture I could get without crashing.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.45.10 AM.png

The beach was pretty cold, but people still got in. Those people did not include me.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.48.45 AM.png

Look how tall he’s getting!

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.53.34 AM.png

We went to the old fashioned 5&10 store and I found a fanny pack! Why did these things ever fall out of fashion? I was so excited and texted this photo to Stephanie. She called it my granny pack. Thanks Steph.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 9.55.27 AM

We ate a ton of yummy beach food.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 10.00.16 AM.png

And visited the cats at the cat rescue. They had over 90 cats! It was like a real life version of Neko Atsume. We would’ve brought home a few if Tom hadn’t put his foot down. I guess it’s good that someone in our family can exercise restraint when it comes to cats.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 10.09.06 AM

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 10.06.33 AM

Of course, there was lots of cross stitching on the porch.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 10.02.01 AM.png

Hello distinguished gentleman!

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 10.03.04 AM.png

Sammy kept me company with his loud snores.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 10.04.37 AM.png

I love the beach!

Weekend Report

Hello Friends!

I hope that all of you had a great Mother’s Day! Before Biggest was born, I had a few miscarriages and it took what felt like a long time to become a Mom. Mother’s Day would sometimes be a sad day back then, so I feel especially thankful and blessed now to wake up to this:

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 10.46.12 AM.png

I must’ve done something very nice in a past life to deserve these three.

So far, 44 is turning out pretty good! My birthday goal of baking a great loaf of bread finally came true on Saturday! The crazy part is that I used the same recipe that I have tried many times before unsuccessfully. Go figure.

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 9.14.06 AM.png

The rain finally stopped and the weekend was sunshine-y and warm. Of course that meant we had to rollerblade (insert eye roll). It was actually more like: Littlest rollerbladed while I parked my butt on the playground, stranded because my shoes were in the car and I couldn’t bear the thought of rollerblading all the way back to get them.

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 9.21.29 AM.png

Last night was our final dance class. Our teacher wanted us to pose for pictures for her Facebook page. Clearly we were her star pupils! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA (Not!)

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 9.24.15 AM.png

So, I’m finally making some stitching progress. Right side- here I come! Sorry for the terrible pictures.

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 9.33.34 AM.png

What’s new with you? Have a great week!

Spring Breakin’

tap… tap… tap…  Is this thing on?

Hi strangers! It has been awhile! How are you?

Spring Break has come and gone. The weather was warm and glorious. I like to take walks and pick up weird specimens to draw. This is from a “Princess Tree”. Thanks Internets for the ID!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.17.40 PM

Check out this cool branch formation. Nature is so symmetrical!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.18.05 PM

I thought I had hit the thrift store jackpot on a Q-snap frame. Too bad I didn’t read the package carefully because… hello

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.21.14 PM.png

It is the size of a table! And made for quilts! Ugh.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.23.10 PM.png

Faceplant

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.24.50 PM.png

Littlest sculpted this. I think the resemblance is uncanny.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.25.31 PM.png

Look at these cute rolls I made!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.27.37 PM.png

Tom tried to walk Charlie on a leash.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.29.18 PM

They didn’t make it very far.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.30.00 PM

I stitched a little. Le sigh. Same ol’ skirt.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.31.10 PM.png

Littlest wanted to stitch too, which made me insanely happy.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.31.53 PM.png

Cute… Cuter… Cutest!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.33.25 PM.png

We built a volcano.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.35.33 PM

Because what else do you do when you’re bored and want to make a giant mess?

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.41.00 PM.png

But it wasn’t all fun and games around here. We tried to instill a good work ethic in the boys by offering them money to clean up sticks in the yard.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.38.31 PM

That lasted about 20 minutes until I looked out the window and saw them doing this instead.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.38.58 PM

That about catches you up. Happy Spring!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.43.41 PM.png

Back at it!

I was super cranky and wanted to stay in for New Year’s Eve but Tom wanted to go out, so I did my makeup and put on pleather pants and we went to a friend’s house. Don’t say that I never take one for the team.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.23.01 PM

On New Year’s Day, we headed to the beach house. The quiet and solitude was perfect after the busyness and overstimulation of the holidays and the city.

Sammy in the car. That dog knows how to work a scarf!

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 2.22.06 PM.png

Tom likes to get up super early and watch the sunrise. The boys and I prefer to stay in the warm comfort of our beds so he takes pictures of the sunrise to show us. It’s a win-win.

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 1.39.28 PMScreen Shot 2016-01-07 at 1.40.06 PM

The beach was relaxing. We went to the arcade, ate junk food, and did A LOT of walking. Good thing I got a new fitness tracker for Christmas, otherwise all of that walking would have been wasted! It doesn’t count unless you have proof.

Biggest took these terrific photos. I love the sun shining in the sky. If you believe in Spirit and the Universe and God and that stuff, that’s what it reminds me of.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.27.05 PM

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.27.39 PM

At long last, we finally went home… HOME(!)… i.e. the best place on Earth. I jumped right into a fit of domesticity, making elderberry syrup…

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.19.27 PM.png

And deodorant bars (I know… same boring mold shape for EVERYTHING. Snore.)

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.23.01 PMScreen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.23.30 PM

Littlest decided that he wanted to write his life story. He worked really hard on it.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.01 PM

My favorite is Chapter 2.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.25 PMScreen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.34 PM

There were sad parts too.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.44 PM

But overall it’s been a pretty good 9 years.

And finally, in unbelievable stitching news, this one came back out!

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 2.09.50 PM.png

It feels good to be stitching again. Here’s to more stitching in 2016!

A Trip to the Big City

Hi Blog!

After Christmas, we packed up and went to New York City for a few days. I go there all the time for work, but the boys haven’t been since they were wee babies. It was fun to experience the city through their eyes. Everything is so big and busy and exciting.

We stayed at a hotel right in Times Square, so it was pretty much sensory overload all the time. We did as many touristy New Yorky things as we could manage, including:

Looking at the holiday window displays at Macy’s

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.02.18 PM

Seeing their cute mugs on the HUGE SCREENS in Times Square

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.03.35 PM

Visiting Rockefeller Center and getting our picture taken in front of the tree

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.05.55 PM

Eating SO … MUCH … FOOD, including wood fired pizza in an old church

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.05.13 PM

And Romantic Sushi for Two

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.08.18 PM

Funny aside… Tom and Biggest ordered the “Sushi for Two” at dinner one night and it ended up being a ROMANTIC sushi for two with dramatic lighting effects. Biggest was mortified. We were dying and now crack up and refer to everything as “Romantic (insert food item) for Two” such as,

Romantic milkshake for two

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.17.08 PM

We spent a day in Central Park. It was cold and dreary, but we had fun anyway.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.12.29 PM

I wanted to ride the carriage being pulled by the horse wearing purple plumes because he looked the fanciest, but wouldn’t you know it that we didn’t get a single photo of the horse and his fancy plumes?! You’ll just have to imagine him.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.13.48 PM

The highlight for Biggest was going into the Ferrari showroom on Park Ave. You can’t tell from his expression in this photo, but he was thrilled and bought a Ferrari model there with his very own money.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.15.03 PM

We were walking by as they were testing the ball for New Years Eve. OMG 2016! 2015, where did you go?!

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.18.00 PM

We took the train, so I brought along my project and managed a few stitches. Hanging my head in shame that I only made it to Day 5 of the stitch-a-long…

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.18.25 PM

But how can you concentrate on stitching when you’re sitting next to this funny boy who waved at every single person we passed at every single station?

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.18.48 PM

Next up… The BEACH!

Ho Ho Ho

Hi Blog. Well, that was a nice long break!

We did a lot and saw a lot and ate a lot. That about sums it up.

Not really! Here are some photos.

Christmas was great. Every year, I am torn by the materialism of it all vs. the desire to have a low key simple holiday. Usually the materialism wins because 1.) I can’t resist indulging the boys while they’re still in the Santa stage and 2.) I run out of time to make all the stuff that I want to make.

We always spend Christmas Eve with Tom’s family. Biggest does this annoying thing now where he sticks his tongue out in all of his pictures.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.51.27 PM.png

He and Tom were twinning, complete with matching tongues.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 6.59.40 PM.png

Santa came after dinner, as he does every year. The kids all know by now that it’s not the real Santa, but there is always a lot of speculation about who will have to conveniently “step out and take an important call” just before Santa arrives. For those wondering, it was Steve.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.14.24 PM.png

Christmas morning is so so so fun with kids. (See the tongue again?)

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.17.35 PM

This year, Littlest asked for a hoverboard and a husky (as in the dog). We didn’t get him a hoverboard (because of those terrible explosion stories) and didn’t get him a real husky either (for obvious reasons). Santa did, however, bring him a STUFFED husky.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.19.20 PM

That Santa! It goes to show that you have to be very specific in your letter to Santa. He loves his stuffed husky, by the way, and named him Max.

Sammy got a new blanket. He claimed that as well as Coal’s new bed as his own. Sammy had a very good Christmas.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.21.59 PM

I got a lot of wonderful gifts, including these beauties. Who doesn’t need some really fuzzy pink slippers?

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.21.04 PM

I rarely get to wear them though because they keep getting stolen by little boys who think they are the funniest and coziest things ever.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.34.17 PM.png

My favorite part of Christmas is the after, when everyone is happy and cozy and we sit down to breakfast.

These two made fresh squeezed orange juice. It tasted even better because they looked so cute making it. It was a real team effort.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.24.28 PM

After Christmas, we went to New York City and the Beach, but those are stories for another day.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 7.50.09 PM.png

Hope that you had a great holiday!
