Stitch Therapy

Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Category: garden (Page 1 of 2)

Oh… heeeeey … Friday, glad you’re finally back!

This week started off really bad, then got better, then got good! So GOOD! And now it’s Friday, which makes it GREAT!

This weekend, we have a scout camping trip. I am not staying for the overnight portion = BONUS!

Today I am thankful for:

A successful violin concert

A reasonably good night’s sleep

A too-short dress that I turned into a shirt! HA!

Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography (sooooo interesting!)

Red Sperry Topsiders

Our strawberries are coming back!

Have a great weekend!

Why hello there.

Monday. Blergh.

Why do weekends have to be so fun? That makes Mondays even worse!

On Friday, Littlest had his Taekwondo belt test. He did great! I’m so proud of him for sticking with it.

Afterwards, my friend and I went out to a new French restaurant. It was tasty. We had oysters and cheese and wine. How predictable. A young drunk landscaper guy tried to chat us up. We were like “Zing! We still got it for a couple of middle aged suburban Moms! Never mind that he was drunk!”

Saturday morning = soccer. The boys have not won a single game this season and are losing their motivation. I feel bad for them, but am secretly glad that we won’t have to sit through tournaments if they keep up this streak.

Tom and I went out on Saturday night. I know! 2 nights out in 1 weekend?! Who am I? We had drinks and dinner and it was fun. No drunk landscapers hit on me, but TOM DID which is even better.

I was laaaazy on Sunday. After a good bit of procrastination, I finally went grocery shopping. It was definitely a low energy cooking day. Accomplished: jambalaya, spaghetti sauce, banana pudding (Vietnamese style mmm!).

In other news:
Littlest modeled his Halloween costume. He says that he needs a new sword to go with it, because last year’s and the previous year’s ninja swords do not work with this particular ninja costume.

Sammy discovered a box.

I am re-reading the Little House books and can’t put them down. My favorite part is when Mary’s all like “My blonde hair is prettier than your brown hair” to Laura and Laura SOCKS HER! Mary totally deserved it.

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 1.42.06 PM

I walked around the woody area in the back of our yard looking for some kind of berry bush that my friend Sharon wanted. I couldn’t find the bush, but did find this SPECTACULAR HOLLOW TREE! It was COMPLETELY HOLLOW!

How was your weekend?

Down by the river.

My office is next to a river. I found that if I squeeze through a gap in the overgrown bushes in just the right spot, there is a tiny beach.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.41.54 PM

It’s not much to look at and is, unfortunately, strewn with trash, but I like to go there at lunch time. It’s a good place to take a breath and decompress. I suppose people know it’s there, but I like to think of it as my secret beach. I like to hear the waves crashing or just watch them ripple softly, depending on the day. I like listening to the leaves rustle overhead and the birds chirping. I like feeling the wind on my face. It even smells beachy. If I close my eyes, I can pretend that I’m at the ocean instead of just standing behind the bushes outside of an office building.

Sometimes I go for a little walk. Lately, I’ve been trying to notice how the plants and trees are changing through the seasons and work on identifying them. For instance, this week I noticed that all of the Honeysuckle is gone and has been replaced by bunches and bunches of Queen Anne’s Lace. I guess it’s technically a weed, but I’ve always been a fan.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.45.05 PM

Did you know that Queen Anne’s Lace is also called a wild carrot? I pulled one up to look at the root and it did indeed resemble a white carrot and it smelled like one too.

Did you also know that there are a few tiny purple blossoms on each flower? They almost look like a squished bug in this picture.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.47.41 PM

Those purple blossoms are one way to tell the difference between Queen Anne’s Lace and Hemlock (which is poisonous!). The other is that Queen Anne’s Lace has hairy stems. See the things you can learn by taking a lunchtime walk?

Last night, I went to my first ever stitching group meeting! The ladies were so welcoming and I really enjoyed it.

We learned some specialty stitches and worked on Christmas ornaments. Here’s where I got with mine.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.52.22 PM

I tried to use nontraditional Christmas colors. We are supposed to complete stitching by the next meeting so that we can work on finishing techniques. So fun! I think I will enjoy being a part of this group.

Finish & Start & Summer & a Boat Trip

Hi Blog! I can’t believe that it has been so long since the last post!

Summer has been busy so far. Here’s what’s been going on…

The boys are enjoying camp; swimming and playing soccer and doing archery each day.

Littlest switched to a new TaeKwonDo school which is super intense.

We have had a lot of playdates.  Everyone is pooped by the end of the day.

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 2.49.15 PM

We found our first red strawberry, only to have it stolen by a chipmunk or some other pest the very next day.

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 2.49.28 PM

I got my hair cut by a Korean lady who didn’t speak much English. I told her I wanted VOLUME and she smiled and nodded and just started cutting away. Now I have bangs and a lot of layers. It’s growing on me.

This is how I usually find Tom and Coal.  Tom: reading. Coal: anywhere that Tom is.

Screen Shot 2014-07-01 at 9.09.26 AM

Good Old Llama (Littlest’s favorite stuffed animal during the baby/toddler years) was rediscovered and has been seen toted around the house again. I love him.

Screen Shot 2014-07-01 at 9.10.55 AM

I finally baked a good loaf of bread! (No pictures, Darn, but trust me!)

Raven Bewitched is finished! This was SO FUN! Definitely my most relaxing stitch ever.

Screen Shot 2014-07-01 at 9.12.44 AM

We are leaving this Sunday for an 8 day cruise to celebrate Tom’s parent’s 50th Anniversary. I have never been on a cruise before and am nervous about 1. getting sea sick and 2. being bored.

To deal with #1, I went to Target and bought every kind of motion sickness medicine that I could get my hands on. To deal with #2, I am packing many books AND a new cross stitch project. So…

Floral Heart Pillow by Modern Folk!

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 1.17.34 PM

I’ve admired his patterns for awhile. I clearly have a thing for monochromatic symmetrical traditional looking pieces, so this fits the bill. Doesn’t it look like it will be such a bliss-out-relaxing-no-thinking-at-all stitch?

The last week of school is finally here. The boys (and I) are excited for Summer to start. I always seem to think that things will slow down over the Summer, but really they go just as fast.

On Saturday, I got it into my head that we needed a new couch for the living room. I was hemming and hawing about it, but then we came up with the brilliant idea to move the furniture from the family room to the living room and get new family room furniture instead. I don’t know what I was thinking when we got light colored furniture for the family room last year. Boys + expensive light colored couch = very bad idea. So, I picked out a new couch and it wasn’t custom order and it was in stock and, lo and behold, it was delivered on Monday and we are already busy breaking it in. How easy was that?

You can’t really see the couch in this picture, but Littlest and I are cuddling on it here. It’s huge! And comfy!

Screen Shot 2014-06-17 at 10.23.47 AM

We still need to find a chair though. Decisions.

So since I was on a redecorating rampage, I also got it into my head that I wanted to paint the desk black. It was previously a kooky chinoiserie number. Here it is in progress.

Screen Shot 2014-06-17 at 10.21.44 AM

I love it!

And in other news, Tom spotted the first tomato this morning.

And, here I am stitching on the train again.

Screen Shot 2014-06-17 at 10.29.20 AM

Can I tell you how ANNOYED I am? I went to re-buy the threads that had blown away in the wind and the store was OUT of Hickory Sticks by Crescent Colours. UGH! Now I have to order online and pay to ship just one skein of floss. I suppose I could substitute the color, but the perfectionist in me is having a hard time coming to terms with this. I know. Someone (me) needs to take a chill pill.

Around here.

I feel bluesy today for no good reason. I guess I am just missing the weekend and being home with my guys.

It has been a busy few days. I had to go to NY twice already and I have to go AGAIN on Thursday. Stressful.

Tom and I had two dates last weekend. One to Sushi (mmm… FEED ME SUSHI!) and one to a Mexican place. I’ve kinda been obsessed with Mexican lately. Once again, our fajitas did not come out sizzling, so Tom asked the waiter about it. He told us that sizzling Fajitas are an American invention and real fajitas don’t come that way. Huh. Imagine that.

I had my bi-annual psychic reading on Saturday. Awesome! We talked about my life’s purpose and about the kids. I’ve been talking a lot about psychics lately, so sorry if you’re not into that. I LOVE psychics!

Tom has been on a pruning rampage in the yard. Seriously… he is pruning LIKE CRAZY! On Sunday night, he went back out to prune some more after dinner and wouldn’t come back in until dark. He’s obsessed. But the yard looks really good, so I guess it’s a productive obsession.

Speaking of obsessions, I’ve barely stitched lately. I miss it sooooo much! It’s just been so nice out that I’d much rather go for a walk or read a book in the evenings. If only there was a way to stitch and walk at the same time. I’d be all over it!

Tiny trains and giant frogs.

I’m sitting here looking through the photos from the weekend. They make me happy.

The Arboretum has a outdoor model railroad display. The whole environment is made of natural materials; plants, twigs, rocks etc. You wouldn’t believe your eyes!

Seriously… made out of twigs!

I could stare at it for hours.

We also visited an old log cabin. It’s a real one from way back when. The boys call it the witch’s house. I’m not sure where they got that.

It’s so small and I like to imagine what it would’ve been like to fit a whole family in there. I guess they didn’t need media rooms back then or Expedit storage units from IKEA.

My inner Laura Ingalls Wilder was going crazy!

This lovely little brook was bubbling right outside the door. Can you imagine a more peaceful place?

Someone enjoyed tickling the giant frog statue.

I took 1,369,7664 photos of flowers. I won’t torture you with all of them.

I also took photos of cute boys when they weren’t looking.

Because God forbid I ask them to pose for a picture. This is what I get…

Have a happy day!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Did you have a nice Mother’s Day?

We had a lovely time… out to breakfast, a visit to an arboretum, and dinner with Tom’s parents. I took a ton of photos at the arboretum. It’s hard to pick my favorites.

There was a bug exhibit.. They had giant wooden sculptures everywhere… so cool!

I enjoyed all of the puffy yummy flowers. Nature is pretty amazing.

Too bad we can’t just move in there. Can you imagine a better place to sit and stitch?

The boys had fun exploring.

Can you see the butterfly?

And the baby birds peeking out of the nest? We saw their Mama flying back and forth with food for them. I guess she didn’t get to rest on her Mother’s Day.

Little boy… Big hill.

It was a magical place.

Flower power.

I had a super fab weekend.

It started off with a bang because I got to have dinner with Stephanie on Friday. Dinner + beer + friend = YAY!

I didn’t wake up in time for boot camp on Saturday. That’s 3 weeks, if you’re counting, but today… TODAY(!) is my official return to healthy eating and exercise.  You heard it here!

Saturday was NOT a healthy day. We went to a strawberry festival but didn’t eat a single strawberry. Instead, we ate crab cakes, fries, and ICE CREAM! It wasn’t even strawberry ice cream.

It was really nice outside all weekend. I took a lot of pictures of flowers, because they stand still and don’t make faces at me (unlike some people around here). We just moved into this house last Summer, so it’s been a surprise to see what’s sprouting in the yard.

The previous owners must have loved pink as much as I do, because it’s pink, pink, pink everywhere.

I love looking out my bedroom window and seeing this pretty lady every morning.

Does anyone know the name of these?

There is a lot of pink inside these days as well. The boys gave me beautiful flowers for my birthday.

That lily could poke your eye out.

And my sweetest of sweeties gave me some roses.

That’s it for today. I’m all pictured out. Happy Monday!

My birthday is on Wednesday. I will be 41 years old. It feels like yesterday when I was turning 21, but that was 20 years ago… practically a lifetime of events and experiences. Where did the time go?

Looking back, I think my 20s were full of confusion and recklessness. My 30s, just busy… with babies, houses, work. Now my 40s? I guess time will tell, but I’m hoping that they will be about introspection, acceptance, and growth. Time is a funny thing.

This weekend was a funny thing too. It was equal parts productive and relaxing. Unfortunately, my general mood of melancholy hung heavily over everything I did. I’m blaming a combination of hormones and impending birthday and trying to ease my way through it.

We spent a lot of time outside which always helps my mood. Tom dug up a bush that was blocking the path from the kitchen door to the grill. I’m all about efficiency, so this made me very happy.

He also makes me very happy. I love him so.

The boys enjoyed jumping on the neighbor’s trampoline and running around like crazy little men.

I enjoyed a good walk, a neighborhood party, wearing sandals, and stitching on the back porch.

We are in the home stretch…

quaker almost done

There is just a small detail to add in the lower left corner and the border to finish up. Do you see the huge frog? I’m not going to tell you where it is. 😉 I considered ripping the section out and redoing it, but decided to leave it alone. I will chalk it up as a tribute to my 40s and a reminder to accept and appreciate the imperfections that make things beautiful just the way they are.
