Stitch Therapy

Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Simple Joys

Today I am happy because:

It’s Friday!

It’s rainy, which means that my feet got all wet walking from the car into the office, but it’s not as hot and it’s kinda cozy and grey.

I came to terms with not being able to keep everything together on my own and asked our housekeeper to come back. I mean, who doesn’t love coming home to toilet paper roses?

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.41.21 AM

My ultra food planning was a success. I packed lunches for the boys and Tom and me every single day this week. I love putting an extra treat in there for them, although yesterday I forgot Tom’s ice pack and his chocolate cookies melted into a big gooey mess.

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.40.27 AM

I finally got a new fitbit and have met the 10,000 step goal every day except yesterday. One night, Tom and Littlest made some kind of deal before our evening walk about having to wear their clothes backwards. Don’t ask.

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.38.52 AM

I haven’t been on Facebook since Monday! And I don’t miss it! And I feel better! There’s a lot to be said for blissful ignorance.

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.41.46 AM

I got together with a friend in NY after a meeting on Wednesday. Usually I make plans and then cancel when my anxiety sets in (secret shame) but this time I stuck with it and we had a lovely visit.

What’s making you happy this week?

A Simple Home

Hi Blog!

Where did this week go? Last night we had crazy thunderstorms. Thunder is kinda cool, but it keeps me up, which is not cool. Insomnia = baking.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.20.12 AM.png

Stephanie and I went to an antique place last weekend. I got this.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.18.30 AM.png

At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, but the sales ladies were staring me down as I was making my decision and it was only $14, which is something a bargain shopper like me could not resist. It’s growing on me now, but I feel like I am walking that fine line between decorating my house with “vintage character” and decorating my house “like a granny.”

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.28.16 AM.png

I also made a second batch of deodorant bars. So far, they are working really well. The true test will be when Summer comes. They will have their job cut out for them.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.21.39 AM.png

The other night, during a different bout of insomnia (do I sense a theme?), I wrote down all of the things that we have been doing towards our goal of living more simply and naturally. It included fun stuff like making our own deodorant and soap and cleaning supplies and basic but useful stuff like recycling old tshirts into rags and using cloth napkins. I felt really proud once I realized how many of these things have become part of our daily routines.

Speaking of daily routines, Sammy has found a new favorite napping spot… the hamper. He seems to prefer it when it is filled with the smelliest boy socks.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.26.05 AM.png

And then there’s Charlie. This is his favorite place these days, sitting and watching the birds flutter by. I think he’s as excited about Spring returning as I am.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.29.46 AM.png

And as for me, I’ve been sketching…

And stitching. I finally tackled frogging and re-stitching the ghoulish lady.
Remember all that fuss over her skin?

So that about sums up the latest around here. What’s new in your world?

Wandering + Wondering

Hi Blog!

It was a busy weekend for little old me.

Tom and I went out for a lovely dinner date on Friday. A new restaurant opened near our house and it is delish. I had the duck. I love duck, but never prepare it at home because it seems like a lot of work. When it’s on a menu, I go for it!

On Saturday, Stephanie and I ventured into the city for a weaving workshop held at the studio of a former classmate of mine.

Screen Shot 2016-01-11 at 8.59.19 AM.png

We weren’t quite sure what to expect, but it was so fun and inspiring! It was not so much about the technical art of weaving but rather about the intuitive and meditative art of weaving. It was so against my usual regimented perfectionistic (hello… cross stitch!) tendencies that it was quite freeing and enjoyable. I think this might become a new hobby because, you know, I need another one.

Sunday was sloooow but productive at the same time. I woke up at 6 and was the first customer at Target at 8am sharp. What is better than having an entire Target practically to yourself? It was like some sort of dream sequence.

But the day wasn’t all dreamy wandering around Target, I went grocery shopping, cooked a ton in preparation for the week ahead, cleaned (Pinterest test of vinegar + Dawn dish soap to clean a shower. It worked!), played piano, read Wonder to the boys (Oh! That book! Have any of you read that book?! My heart hurts! I need to talk about it with someone!),

Screen Shot 2016-01-11 at 9.11.15 AM.png

Watched these two watching football,

Screen Shot 2016-01-11 at 9.03.45 AM.png

And squeezed in between two boys on the couch to do a little stitching. No pics, I was too tired by then to get up and find my phone.

All in all, a good weekend. What’s new with you?

Bad vs. Good

Hi Blog! I am so overdue on an update! Where do we even start?

Last week sucked. If I could show you just one photo to summarize the week, it would be this.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.48.07 AM

Of course, I don’t have enough self control to limit myself to just one photo and, of course, I am being melodramatic because although there were a lot of bad parts, there were good parts too.

Tom was sick. It sucks when he’s sick because he’s my main man! Things just aren’t as easy or fun or happy when he’s not feeling well. Thankfully he is on the mend (that’s the good part!).

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.59.46 AM

The neighbor’s dog chased Charlie into a tree and he got stuck. I was just about to call the fire department when he slid down the trunk and landed on his feet. He’s seriously some kind of miracle cat.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 11.10.22 AM

He hid under the bed after his ordeal until the boys tempted him out with tuna. It is clear that Charlie is my soulmate because I am easily tempted with food too.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.47.05 AM

He’s been getting a lot of TLC since then. I’m not sure if he would consider that a good or bad thing.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.45.36 AM

Soccer season is in full swing, which means a lot of time on the fields. The good part is that after 7+years of soccer, I finally bought myself a folding chair. Game changer! Funny how I was so cheap about a $10 chair.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.43.12 AM

Littlest wanted to start a secret club so I showed him how to design a logo on Illustrator.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.50.35 AM

I was really proud of how hard he worked on it.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.51.03 AM

Of course when I came back, I found this…

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.51.51 AM

Biggest left this for me on the counter. The mint sprig was a nice touch. He is such a sweet boy. I can’t bring myself to eat that tomato.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 10.57.15 AM

Stephanie and I spent the day together on Saturday. I got to visit her new house (swooooon!) and go antiquing (yay!) and have lunch (mmm…). Friend days are just what you need sometimes.

There hasn’t been a ton of stitching going on, but there’s been a little progress.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 11.23.46 AM

Note to self: Make time to stitch this week.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 11.22.58 AM

How are you?

Stuff

Hello Monday.

I’m running out of things to blog about since I:

1. barely cross stitch these days,

2. am cranky,

3. talk incessantly about my cat.

Stephanie and I did finally make it to dinner and it was FUN!

Drinks on the water = YAY!

Screen Shot 2015-06-29 at 2.01.41 PM

This weekend it RAINED so I stayed inside and worked on hemming curtains for our bedroom. Yes, it only took me 3 years to hang curtains. I like them, but the hems are crooked. How hard is it to sew even lines? (angry face emoticon)

Man hanging things = SEXY!

Screen Shot 2015-06-29 at 1.55.03 PM

The boys turned their room into a private billiards club complete with comfy lounge chairs.

Screen Shot 2015-06-29 at 1.57.38 PM

The eye masks were a nice touch. That’s one classy lounge.

Screen Shot 2015-06-29 at 1.58.25 PM

Luckily they said that we could be members of their club. We spent an evening hanging out and it was indeed quite relaxing and comfortable. They look like first class passengers on a transatlantic flight.

Screen Shot 2015-06-29 at 1.59.20 PM

But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Charlie discovered his shadow! Hilarity ensued.

Screen Shot 2015-06-29 at 2.05.46 PM

The End.

(not so) Deep thoughts

The other night we had the most powerful storm. It caused quite a bit of damage in neighboring areas, but we did ok. After the storm ended, the sky was lit up all fantastic and yellow. It was weird to see a bright yellow sky at 9:00 at night.

Screen Shot 2015-06-25 at 9.09.26 AM

I haven’t been quite as productive this week. In fact, I am feeling downright lazy. It’s nutty how I know something will make me feel better (get up and be productive), but I can’t make myself do it.

Screen Shot 2015-06-25 at 9.13.29 AM

The boys started camp this week. They surprised us by not wanting to go but now that they’re there, they are enjoying it. They are so tan and tired by the end of the day. I approve!

Screen Shot 2015-06-25 at 9.18.39 AM

I have plans with my friend for dinner tonight. She is the type of friend who lifts my spirits and is a joy to be around. The problem is that we are both introverts and have a tendency to cancel our plans at the last minute because the temptation of staying home is so great. So, Stephy, if you are reading this, and you get one of those “Sigh… I’m so tired…” texts from me this afternoon, tell me to snap out of it!

Happy Thursday, Friends.

Why hello there.

Monday. Blergh.

Why do weekends have to be so fun? That makes Mondays even worse!

On Friday, Littlest had his Taekwondo belt test. He did great! I’m so proud of him for sticking with it.

Afterwards, my friend and I went out to a new French restaurant. It was tasty. We had oysters and cheese and wine. How predictable. A young drunk landscaper guy tried to chat us up. We were like “Zing! We still got it for a couple of middle aged suburban Moms! Never mind that he was drunk!”

Saturday morning = soccer. The boys have not won a single game this season and are losing their motivation. I feel bad for them, but am secretly glad that we won’t have to sit through tournaments if they keep up this streak.

Tom and I went out on Saturday night. I know! 2 nights out in 1 weekend?! Who am I? We had drinks and dinner and it was fun. No drunk landscapers hit on me, but TOM DID which is even better.

I was laaaazy on Sunday. After a good bit of procrastination, I finally went grocery shopping. It was definitely a low energy cooking day. Accomplished: jambalaya, spaghetti sauce, banana pudding (Vietnamese style mmm!).

In other news:
Littlest modeled his Halloween costume. He says that he needs a new sword to go with it, because last year’s and the previous year’s ninja swords do not work with this particular ninja costume.

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 1.40.19 PM

Sammy discovered a box.

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 1.41.22 PM

I am re-reading the Little House books and can’t put them down. My favorite part is when Mary’s all like “My blonde hair is prettier than your brown hair” to Laura and Laura SOCKS HER! Mary totally deserved it.

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 1.42.06 PM

I walked around the woody area in the back of our yard looking for some kind of berry bush that my friend Sharon wanted. I couldn’t find the bush, but did find this SPECTACULAR HOLLOW TREE! It was COMPLETELY HOLLOW!

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 1.43.00 PM

How was your weekend?

Monday!

Work has been turning me into a grump, so I decided that an attitude shift was in order. Last week, I tried really hard not to COMPLAIN and, you know what, it worked! I felt much more positive by week’s end.

It may also have helped that I got a lot of stitching time. On Friday, I brought my cross stitching to work and spent my lunch time stitching in the park. A stitch break was just what I needed.

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 2.07.38 PM

Friday night, I sewed my first pair of pajama pants (for Biggest)! It was pretty exciting.

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 2.01.10 PM

Stephanie and I hung out on Saturday. Lunch (Yum!), followed by a trip to the fabric store (Yay!), followed by afternoon cocktails (YUMMM!), followed by a quiet evening at home with TV and stitching (Perfection!). I am making good progress on this.

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 2.04.34 PM

Sunday was sooooooooooper productive. I spent almost all day in the kitchen (Fun!). I made:

  • chocolate zucchini bread
  • regular bread
  • spaghetti sauce (for this week)
  • more pickles (New recipe… this one is a keeper!)
  • meatloaf, potatoes, and green beans (for dinner)

I love productive days! I also did laundry, went grocery shopping, cleaned up the house, and made another pair of these…

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 2.03.26 PM

Oh, and look at my cute sewing buddy!

Happy Monday!

Casting on.

It’s a rainy Monday here in Pennsylvania. The weather over the weekend was lovely, so I won’t complain too much about the clouds today.

My friend had a Mom & kids happy hour play date on Friday. Littlest was in one of those moods where he thought everyone was being unfair to him. It started off rough, but then everyone mellowed and we had a good time.

Our neighborhood had a giant yard sale on Saturday. We walked the dogs so, of course, we had to stop and look at everyone’s stuff. I swore that I wouldn’t bring home more junk, but the call of good bargains was just too strong to resist. The best thing that I found was a hand made quilt! I’ve wanted one forever and have finally come to terms that I will never be able to sew it myself. This one was only $10 and pretty and in perfect condition! I know, right?! I had intended it for the beach house, but I love it so much that it might stay at the regular house. Squeeee!

The next best thing that I got was a bread machine, which I’ve also wanted forever! My sourdough experiments have been mediocre at best, so I rationalized that a bread machine would magically transform my bread into something delicious. I’ve already used it to make a loaf of white bread (bland… it was supposed to be french bread, but I messed up the settings) and a loaf of honey wheat bread (that one was mmmm…). Now I’m obsessed with bread baking again. Next up, tackling that sourdough again! A few online sources suggest using the machine just to knead and proof the dough then putting it in the actual oven to bake. Interesting. I’ll let you know how it goes.

And, (it keeps getting better) I bought a book on how to knit and the lady selling it gave me some yarn. We had dinner plans with friends, but they canceled and I was secretly sooooo glad and immediately ran right out to buy some needles, which led to this…

Screen Shot 2014-06-09 at 3.27.35 PM

Pathetic! I couldn’t even figure out how to cast on, which led to this…

Screen Shot 2014-06-09 at 3.31.21 PM

Seriously, how cute is he? Here’s Tom trying to figure it out so that he could teach me, which led to this…

Screen Shot 2014-06-09 at 3.30.11 PM

A successful cast-on!!! Wheeeeee! Neither of us could figure out what to do next… you know, the actual knitting part, but that’s a task for another day.

Sunday, I baked more bread, and kickboxed, and cross stitched, and hung laundry outside in the sun, and planted some green onions, and ate hot wings, which basically equals a perfect day in my nerdy introverted world.

Walk Therapy.

It never fails that when I have the most to do, that I end up procrastinating the most.

It is finally Spring-like and sunny and blue-skied here in Pennsylvania. Last night, Tom took Littlest to karate so Biggest and I spent a luxurious evening alone together. We took the dogs for a long walk and chatted away; about all kinds of things such as the best snacks to pack for school, a cool new type of Lamborghini that he will design someday, and what fossils we would find if we dug up our back yard. It was the best kind of conversation.

Today I went for a walk at lunch time with a work friend. Although we talked about totally different topics; such as office politics, worrying about our children getting into good colleges, and growing old, it was a good kind of conversation too.

Maybe walks = good conversation.

I am working on my Stephanie project again. I tore out the big pink flower on the left because I didn’t like how the fabric was puckering.

Screen Shot 2014-04-03 at 2.44.40 PM

Unfortunately, I’m almost done re-stitching and it still puckers. So annoying. Stephanie thinks that I’m being anal retentive. Probably.

The pattern is really cute and super cheery. I wish I had used linen instead of Aida. It is a personal opinion, but linen just feels so much better on my hands when I’m stitching. Even after all this time, the Aida still feels stiff. But maybe that will end up being a positive when it’s time for framing. I love trying something new with each project. Stitching on Aida? Check!
