Stitch Therapy

Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Stuff I did

Hi Poor Neglected Blog!

Thanksgiving already seems long gone, but I hope that you all had wonderful celebrations with your friends and family.

Here’s what we have been up to:

We ran our first 5K as a family!

It was really fun and I am so proud of everyone. The best part was the couples massage that Tom and I treated ourselves to the following day. If races=massages, then sign me up for more!

I got some Halloween makeup kits on clearance intending to save them for next year, but someone was bored and wanted to try one. Is this creepy or what?

The weather has been crazy. Last weekend, we went from this during the day (in short sleeves)

to this at night (flurries and our first fire of the season!).

I tried my hand at crocheting again, but couldn’t remember how to “turn”, so here is my very long skinny “scarf.” Voila!

Tom found the perfect Christmas sweater (that cat!!!).

Speaking of cats, this guy was 100% anti-cat before we got Charlie. I think that he’s grown on him.

I mean, how could he not? Charlie is the BEST (ALL THE HEART EYES!) even when he drops a dead mouse right next to me (such as he did last week).

OH CHARLIE! Don’t ever change!

It was a nice weekend around here.

There was the usual stuff like…

Stitching… Remind me to tell you about how when I took this picture, I was stitching in the car (because it was too windy outside) and how I forgot to turn off my car lights and how my battery died and how a lady tried to help me but it didn’t work and how my phone battery died then too and how Tom had to drive back from New Jersey to get me. Oops! (I guess you don’t have to remind me now because I just told you.)

I cooked a lot and tried (again) to crochet.

My fingers just don’t get it! I ended up sweaty and nauseous and frustrated. I really hate crochet!

We watched Tom and his brothers run a half marathon. It is always fun to see the guys run through the finish line, but the highlight for the boys was taking the train into the city and having a picnic lunch afterwards. That was pretty exciting.

This week is Rosh Hashanah which = short school week, which = short work week for me! YAY!

Happy Rosh Hashanah! Happy Fall Equinox!

It was a dark and stormy night.

The temperature got all the way into the 60s yesterday then last night there was a bizarre windy storm that knocked branches all over the place and woke everyone up. Tonight they are predicting snow. WHAT?!! This weather is crazytown.

I have been stressed out this week with all kinds of planning and working and life nonsense. Thankfully, most of this has been contained to the daytime hours so that our evenings have stayed relatively quiet and relaxing. My favorite time of the day is when we are all finally home and sitting down to dinner. There may have been way too many convenience foods on the table this week, but I’m still thankful that we got to eat them together.

Last night, while we were waiting for Tom to get home, the boys played while I practiced crocheting. After we ate, the boys worked on their homework and I squeezed in a little more crochet time while helping them. I’ve been hooking little sections, pulling them apart, and then hooking them again. My work still doesn’t look so good, but there’s something satisfying in doing and redoing, over and over.

After homework and baths, we turned on a little Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil (the boys’ favorite show du jour). Littlest sweetie (inspired by Kick’s daredevil moves) proclaimed that he is ready to learn how to ride a two-wheeler. Older sweetie cuddled against me and stroked my arm in that way that makes all of my troubles melt away. Tom read his book nearby and the dogs were sprawled all over the couch and floor and us. I cross stitched a few more lines of LOVE and enjoyed my little family.

A nice night.

The end.

Slowing down.

My oldest love bug turns 8 next week. We are planning his birthday party for this Sunday. Where does the time go?

The days and weeks have been rushing by. Sometimes (a lot of times), I have to remind myself to slow down and enjoy the moment. This goes against my very nature as a planner/worrier/doer. That’s why I love cross stitching. It’s easy to get lost in the project and slow down. Bliss.

Last night I worked some more on my crocheting. I’ve added the single crochet to my repertoire in addition to the chain stitch. It looks a little wonky but baby steps, right? I also switched from the finer yarn to a bulkier one. I’m finding that it’s easier to see what’s going on with the thicker yarn.

My littlest love bug cuddled up against me on the couch to see what I was doing. He asked me to teach him and when I tried, he quickly said, “Hmmm… maybe I’d rather play Skylanders” and scooted away. He’s always cracking me up.

Here he is running around the house wearing my sweater.

Chain stitchin’ fool.

Happy Monday! (Not really, but I’m pretending to be cheery and hope that actual cheery will follow.)

I had a reaaaallllly super weekend. Tom and I had a date night and went to see the comedian, Jim Gaffigan. He was HILARIOUS.

I also had my crochet lesson. Crocheting is really hard! I was completely uncoordinated and concentrating so hard that I had crazy tense claw fingers. I thought crocheting was supposed to be relaxing! Not so!

So far, I’ve managed to learn the chain stitch, but everything beyond that creates a jumbled mess. I’m brainstorming things that can be made with just one long chainstitch… a really long, skinny, scarf? Crocheted spaghetti? A yarn wig? Hmmm…

The best part about crocheting is that I now have a pretty bowl with yarn in it. I always love those photos that people have on their knitting blogs of bowls filled with colorful yarn and gorgeous works in progress. They always looks so colorful and cozy and quaint!

Now I have my own bowl! YAY! It gave me a reason to break out my camera and work on picture taking skills.

I took photography classes in college and learned all of the technical stuff way back when, but promptly forgot all of it. Whose brain has room for f-stops and shutter speed when you’re busy remembering important things like the names of celebrity babies and whether or not it’s trash day?

Anyhoo… this weekend I actually read the book that came with my camera and practiced taking photos on the manual setting only. Enter crazy tense claw hand again. These hobbies are nerve-wracking!

My bowl of yarn!

The doggies. Holly (the white one) is clearly in charge.

Our sweet boy (sometimes grumpy old man), Coal.

I hate tea, but love my cute little cross stitch mug.

That’s the scoop for now. Happy Monday, everyone!

Crochet therapy?

We had Scouts last night, so no stitching. 🙁  We worked on our pinewood derby cars for the big race coming up. At first, my guy wanted to paint his car black with white racing stripes. Halfway through, he decided that he’d rather it was painted red, white and blue like an American flag. Needless to say, it is looking rather interesting.

Yesterday I went out at lunch and bought a set of crochet hooks and yarn. I am super excited because a friend is teaching me how to crochet this weekend! I really want to make one of these:

It’s funny how cross stitch has really ignited my interest in trying other needle crafts as well. I <3 cross stitch so!
