Discovering me … one stitch at a time

The Power of Meow

Today is rainy, but it is supposed to go up to 60 degrees! In February!

Did you have a nice weekend?

Biggest celebrated his 12th(!!!) birthday with a party with friends. It is hard to believe that we have an official tween in our midst.

We recently bought a new investment property. It is always a bit of a surprise when we actually get the official paperwork and can enter the house. You never know what you’ll find.

This weekend, we went to the new place and I found this…

Hee! I cleaned it up and brought it home with me. I love old cross stitches and the stories that they tell. We also found 7 guitars and an organ but this isn’t a musical instrument blog. It’s not much of a cross stitch blog anymore either, but meh… that’s neither here nor there.

Do any of you like Eckhart Tolle? Tom bought me a copy of “The New Earth” maybe two years ago and I just could not get through it. I picked it up again a few weeks ago and, this time, it totally made sense! I liked it so much that I went out and bought “The Power of Now” too. I am having difficulty with that one so far, but maybe in 2 years, I’ll totally get it.

But, anyhoo, I think I’ve been driving everyone crazy talking about my “pain body” and quoting ET (pet name for Eckhart Tolle) a gajillion times a day.

ET knows what he’s talking about!

Happy Tuesday, Friends!

January Daze

Hi Blog!

I have been quite buried around here. You know, with the usual stuff, but here’s the fun stuff!

We visited a pretty lake on a very cold day. (It’s apparently super entertaining to fight with your brother over who gets to break each and every ice patch with a stick.)

I attended a nicely styled dinner event. (That’s a blurry me at the end of the table.)

Littlest has been taking ice skating lessons. (1st lesson=tears, but subsequent lessons have been going great! Yay!)

We finally got some snow. (It’s all gone now, replaced by cold blustery rain this week. Yuck.)

The boys have been scaring me with a fake slug placed strategically around the house. (It’s so creepy looking. I try to scare them back but have not been successful. Yet!)

We have been having fun cooking together. (It’s the only time I can get him to set the table.)

And of course eating together. (Biggest made this pie. Yum!)

Small dog or big cat? (You decide.)

What have you been up to? Happy January 24th!

A visit from the Christmas Chicken

Can you believe that it’s really 2017? Do you remember when the year 2000 seemed so futuristic and far away and here we are 17 years later!

How was your holiday? I never totally got rid of the grumps, but did manage to put on a happy face and hide them well enough as not to be a Debbie Downer.

Anyhoo, here’s what we did…

There is a story that gets told over and over about how when Tom and his brothers and cousins were younger, a giant costumed chicken would show up at various family functions. This year, Tom thought it would be funny if a chicken showed up on Christmas Eve instead of Santa.

Guess who he thought should be the chicken?

That would be none other than yours truly.

Thankfully, one of his brothers stepped in at the last minute and made a great Christmas chicken.

Santa showed up too. It was mayhem.

The boys pretty much got everything their little hearts desired on Christmas morning. So much for minimalism and simplicity.

I was off from work the week between Christmas and New Years. It was nice to hunker down and be lazy. We spent our time…

Coloring

Taking a long hike

Creating animations

I checked out two biographies from the library, one on Julia Child and the other on Catherine the Great. Culinary History Royal Nerd heaven!

We went to the beach house on Thursday and stayed through the New Year. Biggest was excited to test out the crab trap that he designed and built.

He caught 11 crabs and we made a delicious crab bisque!

We went to the Melting Pot for dinner one night which has inspired us to up our at-home fondue game in 2017. I can already tell that my diet is not going to go well.

We visited the cat rescue and pretty much wanted to take every cat home with us.

I was particularly fond of the three black cats on the windowsill. How cute are they?!

And worked on a big puzzle.

I say “we”, but really it was “me” who kinda got obsessed with it.

I spent New Years Eve in my jammies reading about Catherine the Great, which was GREAT. Some of us didn’t make it till midnight.

Happy 2017, Friends!

Stuff I did

Hi Poor Neglected Blog!

Thanksgiving already seems long gone, but I hope that you all had wonderful celebrations with your friends and family.

Here’s what we have been up to:

We ran our first 5K as a family!

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-1-08-43-pm

It was really fun and I am so proud of everyone. The best part was the couples massage that Tom and I treated ourselves to the following day. If races=massages, then sign me up for more!

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-1-13-26-pm

I got some Halloween makeup kits on clearance intending to save them for next year, but someone was bored and wanted to try one. Is this creepy or what?

screen-shot-2016-11-23-at-3-52-29-pm

The weather has been crazy. Last weekend, we went from this during the day (in short sleeves)

screen-shot-2016-11-23-at-3-55-40-pm

to this at night (flurries and our first fire of the season!).

screen-shot-2016-11-29-at-3-49-58-pm

I tried my hand at crocheting again, but couldn’t remember how to “turn”, so here is my very long skinny “scarf.” Voila!

screen-shot-2016-11-23-at-3-54-31-pm

Tom found the perfect Christmas sweater (that cat!!!).

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-1-04-11-pm

Speaking of cats, this guy was 100% anti-cat before we got Charlie. I think that he’s grown on him.

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-1-06-50-pm

I mean, how could he not? Charlie is the BEST (ALL THE HEART EYES!) even when he drops a dead mouse right next to me (such as he did last week).

screen-shot-2016-11-29-at-3-45-42-pm

OH CHARLIE! Don’t ever change!

Things & Stuff

Hi Blog!

It has indeed been a whirlwind around here. Last weekend was very festive with Tom’s birthday, the Halloween block party, annual spooky family dinner, and, of course, Trick-or-Treating. I didn’t take any pics. Who am I??!!

This week, I…

Have been immersed in my new (old) Julia Child cookbook that I found at the thrift store. She is so long winded. I love it! 2 whole pages on how to properly boil an egg!

screen-shot-2016-11-04-at-10-04-44-am

Could truthfully use the excuse “the cat ate my homework.”

screen-shot-2016-11-04-at-10-07-53-am

Listened to not one, but TWO, violin players in the house now! We’re on our way to being a string quartet!

Have a great weekend, Friends!

Tricks & Treats

Hi Blog! Another weekend has come and gone.

Saturday was windy and cold! Tom and Biggest went to the beach house to do some fishing and crabbing. Biggest has really caught the fishing bug! It’s great to see his enthusiasm.

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-33-24-pm

While they were away, Littlest and I spent some quality time together. We:

shopped for Halloween costumes,

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-27-19-pm

picked out Tom’s birthday presents (this Thursday! 45! Wheeee!),

made gluten free pumpkin muffins (yes, I’m back at it!),

did a little grocery shopping, where I managed to drop and shatter a glass bottle of tea tree oil in the checkout line at Whole Foods. Mortifying! Especially when people started to wrinkle their noses and say “What’s that smell?”

went on a gluten free pizza and frozen yogurt date,

and watched Zootopia while cross stitching!!!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-31-19-pm

On Sunday, we dragged the Halloween bins down from the attic, which led to hours of trying on old costumes and giggling hysterically. Here’s a random sampling of what we modeled:

Spock ears
Karate outfit
Cowboy/Cowgirl
Caveman/Cavegirl
Chinese dress
Red Riding Hood/Wolf
Monk with pug head
Wednesday Addams

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-28-36-pm

The BEST part is that I found a costume that I made for Sammy when he was just a puppy. He wore it to a costume contest and won. He was even featured on the evening news! Sammy has put on some weight over the years (sigh… haven’t we all?) and it no longer fits, but Charlie was able to be squeezed into it! HA!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-29-18-pm

The WORST part is that it’s been a few years since I’ve worn some of these costumes too and could barely get them zipped up. Sammy, I feel your pain.

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-26-43-pm

Charlie, afterwards, obviously trying to forget the entire ordeal. Sorry, Charlie!

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-30-09-pm

Happy Monday!

Around here…

Tom and I have been taking turns being sick.

The two older guys (Tom and Biggest) went to the beach house to go crabbing. Biggest caught 2 blue crabs and proudly cooked them.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-04-31-pm

Littlest and I went to the roller rink (old pic from last Summer, also known as my roller queen days)

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-05-53-pm

And prepared a fondue feast for Tom and Biggest’s return home.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-06-40-pm

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-08-01-pm

Sunday was cold and rainy, so…

I baked Pesto bread (which got weirdly tall), but tasted delicious.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-09-37-pm

Tom hung our new (old) lucky horseshoes above the doors.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-09-59-pm

Littlest sat at the top of the stairs creating comic book characters.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-10-33-pm

Biggest disappeared into his room (Preteen! No photos!)

Sammy did what Sammy does best.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-15-41-pm

Coal celebrated his 15th birthday!

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-2-14-20-pm

Charlie hung out in a box.

What did you do this weekend?

Behind the Scenes

We currently have house guests and hosted a family dinner party for 17 last weekend. I am so frazzled and have been averaging 2-3 hours of sleep per night for the past few days. If I can just make it though this week (which includes two work trips) and Littlest’s birthday sleepover on Friday, it will be time for me and Tom to jet away to gay Par-ee! Keeping my eye on the prize!

Tom snapped some photos of me taking photos for my next CrossStitcher article. Lest you think I know anything about photography, I’m keeping it real here on le blog by showing these behind-the-scenes pics.

How you do it when you’re a shorty and use a door mat as a fancy backdrop. Paula, can you spot the cute polka dot bag that you sent to me?

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 3.36.24 PM

Sometimes getting a good shot means that you have to sit in the bushes. This is hardcore photojournalism in action!

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 3.39.56 PM

In other news…

Charlie routinely turns his nose up at his fancy cat beds, but has claimed an old potato chip box as his favorite hangout.

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 3.47.28 PM

Me and Littlest eye-balling the Carrot cake even though we have a perfectly good Chocolate cake in front of us.

Parent-types yucking it up in front of my cross stitch wall.

Did you have a good weekend?

Simple Joys

Today I am happy because:

It’s Friday!

It’s rainy, which means that my feet got all wet walking from the car into the office, but it’s not as hot and it’s kinda cozy and grey.

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.39.25 AM

I came to terms with not being able to keep everything together on my own and asked our housekeeper to come back. I mean, who doesn’t love coming home to toilet paper roses?

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.41.21 AM

My ultra food planning was a success. I packed lunches for the boys and Tom and me every single day this week. I love putting an extra treat in there for them, although yesterday I forgot Tom’s ice pack and his chocolate cookies melted into a big gooey mess.

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.40.27 AM

I finally got a new fitbit and have met the 10,000 step goal every day except yesterday. One night, Tom and Littlest made some kind of deal before our evening walk about having to wear their clothes backwards. Don’t ask.

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.38.52 AM

I haven’t been on Facebook since Monday! And I don’t miss it! And I feel better! There’s a lot to be said for blissful ignorance.

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.41.46 AM

I got together with a friend in NY after a meeting on Wednesday. Usually I make plans and then cancel when my anxiety sets in (secret shame) but this time I stuck with it and we had a lovely visit.

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 9.42.04 AM

What’s making you happy this week?
