Stitch Therapy

Discovering me … one stitch at a time

Category: beach (Page 2 of 4)

Back at it!

I was super cranky and wanted to stay in for New Year’s Eve but Tom wanted to go out, so I did my makeup and put on pleather pants and we went to a friend’s house. Don’t say that I never take one for the team.

On New Year’s Day, we headed to the beach house. The quiet and solitude was perfect after the busyness and overstimulation of the holidays and the city.

Sammy in the car. That dog knows how to work a scarf!

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 2.22.06 PM.png

Tom likes to get up super early and watch the sunrise. The boys and I prefer to stay in the warm comfort of our beds so he takes pictures of the sunrise to show us. It’s a win-win.

The beach was relaxing. We went to the arcade, ate junk food, and did A LOT of walking. Good thing I got a new fitness tracker for Christmas, otherwise all of that walking would have been wasted! It doesn’t count unless you have proof.

Biggest took these terrific photos. I love the sun shining in the sky. If you believe in Spirit and the Universe and God and that stuff, that’s what it reminds me of.

At long last, we finally went home… HOME(!)… i.e. the best place on Earth. I jumped right into a fit of domesticity, making elderberry syrup…

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.19.27 PM.png

And deodorant bars (I know… same boring mold shape for EVERYTHING. Snore.)

Littlest decided that he wanted to write his life story. He worked really hard on it.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.01 PM

My favorite is Chapter 2.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.25 PMScreen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.34 PM

There were sad parts too.

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 8.20.44 PM

But overall it’s been a pretty good 9 years.

And finally, in unbelievable stitching news, this one came back out!

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 2.09.50 PM.png

It feels good to be stitching again. Here’s to more stitching in 2016!

Work and life stuff have been crazy which means very little time for fun things… like blogging and stitching and lying around for hours mindlessly scrolling though Pinterest. Le sigh. What’s a girl to do?

This week I had to commute two days to NYC in the rain [equal parts boring (long train rides with dead cell phone battery) and stressful (meetings with angry people)], get a mammogram, AND go for my annual exam (if you know what I mean). It that isn’t the trifecta of an icky week, I don’t know what is. But enough complaining, let’s catch up on the fun stuff!

Thanksgiving was delicious. Tom’s parents do all of the hosting and cooking, so we just show up and eat. I used to mind this because I love hosting events, but have come to appreciate the benefits of this arrangement!

Our elf on the shelf returned from the North Pole on Thanksgiving night.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.44.37 PM

The boys were pretty excited, but Sammy wasn’t so impressed with his arrival.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.45.28 PM

We spent a few days at the beach house. The weather was unseasonably warm and sunny.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.47.13 PM

We discovered this new-fangled version of Pac-Man on the boardwalk. Not to brag or anything, but I was kind of a Ms. Pac-Man legend in the day. Isn’t it funny that when people say “not to brag,” they are totally bragging. But since I’m already bragging, I will tell you that I once had the high score on TWO separate Ms. Pac-Man machines at the same time on the boardwalk. Does that make me cooler in your eyes?

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.48.22 PM.png

Tom made me DO WORK while we were away, so I took this picture to show how totally hardworking and techie I am (nothing could be further from the truth) with two computers going at once!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.55.20 PM.png

We made it out for dinner one night at our favorite shore spot. We always go for the Early Bird special and I always “pretend” that I don’t realize there is an Early Bird special when the waiter tells us about it.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.57.12 PM

When we got home, Littlest was determined to learn how to skate board.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 12.59.49 PM.png

I didn’t stitch at all, which gave Charlie ample opportunity to really get comfortable in my stitching basket.

First he just sat in it.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.01.08 PM

Then he napped in it.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.01.21 PM

Then he cleaned his you-know-what in it. UGH! CHARLIE!!!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.01.42 PM

We had a strange bird meeting on our patio. There were more birds, but I couldn’t get them all in the picture. So weird, right? Can someone who knows more about birds than I do, tell me what they are doing?

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 1.05.12 PM.png

And, oh happy day(!), I found some cool cross stitch stuff at the thrift store.

What’s new with you? Happy Thursday!

Sitting on the dock of a bay

Hi Blog!

Maybe it’s obvious to everyone else, but I realized over the weekend that I like to be busy. Because I was sick leading up to our trip, I didn’t do such a good job of planning food and activities. So we didn’t do much, besides eat out and hang out. The boys thought it was great but I was SO BORED! It was so foreign to me to not be cooking or busy with something. Is this how normal people relax? Weird.

Here are some photos.

Always a packed car.

How was your weekend?

Last night I got hit by a terrible stomach bug and feel crappy today. Thankfully this is a 3 day weekend! We are going to the beach house. Never mind that I haven’t packed yet. Details… details. One of these days I will make everyone pack for themselves. That will probably mean that we will have Pokemon cards and a laptop, but no toothbrushes or clean underwear.

I am hoping for some quality stitch time at the beach. Yesterday I bought myself another Hardwicke Manor hoop. If you haven’t tried these hoops, you should! They really are the best. Crabby Cross Stitch Lady agrees and she knows everything!

Good things today:

a (relatively) clean desk

Friday jeans day

cold water

that the boys still like to snuggle

Honey Nut Cheerios

On Piano & Politics

Hello Blog O’ Mine.

I am in a bit of a tizzy this week. If you’ve been reading this blog for any amount of time, you know that I’m a homebody, so when faced with a week (like this one) where we have obligations almost every night, I get a bit anxious. Blergh.

Last night I had piano! We learned the C chord (I felt way ahead because I’ve been practicing that one for weeks), as well as things like staccato and slur and rests. Piano is so much fun!

I was hyped up when I got home from class, so Tom and I finally started on Season 3 of House of Cards. We only watched Episode 1 and it is exciting already! What ever will that sneaky Frank Underwood get into next?!

Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 9.22.14 AM

I take TV too seriously and get worked up after watching shows like this… as in, is this bad stuff really happening in the White House?! Tom doesn’t help by telling me that it does! He knows that it gets my goat.

Today I am thankful for:

It’s supposed to get warmer this week. Ice and snow, please melt!

I need to go to the doctor and they fit me in for early next week. Yay and thank you!

Spring Break in Florida at the end of this month!

Did you know?

The other night, Tom asked me to write down a list of things I want to do in my life (kinda like a Bucket List, but I hate that phrase). It occurred to me that almost everything I wrote had to do with “be at home, make stuff for my family, find inner peace, slow down” and my current life is mostly “work, run to a million activities, juggle and do.”

Something’s not quite right about that. I guess it has to do with my season in life; busy career, active school-aged children, blah blah blah… but it’s got me thinking about things and wondering how I can go about slowing down.

Remember that herbal studies program that I’ve been doing (halfheartedly, as of late)? Our reading last week was about finding and recognizing the simple moments of joy during the day. Timely, right? Someone must be trying to tell me something.

So on that note, I am going to try to be more present and notice those moments. Anyone want to try it with me?

A few simple joys from the past few days include:

  • Listening to that sound that the waves make when they lap up against the shore.
  • Washing the dishes (Am I the only one who LOVES washing the dishes and having a clean kitchen as a result?).
  • Enjoying a GIANT latte every morning. Such an indulgence but sooooo worth it.
  • Running into many familiar faces at Back-to-School night. I love that the boys are growing up in a close-knit community.
  • The cooler weather. Fall is coming!
  • Chatting with my funny guys at dinner.
  • New pants that fit just right!

That wasn’t so hard!

Home Sweet Home.

Hi! Remember me? It has been so long. I feel like I have a ton to write about, but at the same time, really nothing at all.

Paris was great, work wise. I got tons of inspiration for new projects. As usual, I was jet lagged and homesick. Clearly I was not made for the jet setting lifestyle.

I had fun buying little goodies for my gang; French comic books and cars for the boys, these cool stress reducing coloring books for me and Tom,

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 1.20.52 PM

and well.. I might have gotten myself a goodie too… (Seriously, how could I resist?!) you know, to help combat my home sickness.

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 1.18.41 PM

It was sooooo good to come home though and see my bunch of sillies. I guess I’m just a homebody because I would trade Paris any day for…

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 1.40.52 PM

It’s sure good to be home.

Down by the river.

My office is next to a river. I found that if I squeeze through a gap in the overgrown bushes in just the right spot, there is a tiny beach.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.41.54 PM

It’s not much to look at and is, unfortunately, strewn with trash, but I like to go there at lunch time. It’s a good place to take a breath and decompress. I suppose people know it’s there, but I like to think of it as my secret beach. I like to hear the waves crashing or just watch them ripple softly, depending on the day. I like listening to the leaves rustle overhead and the birds chirping. I like feeling the wind on my face. It even smells beachy. If I close my eyes, I can pretend that I’m at the ocean instead of just standing behind the bushes outside of an office building.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.40.12 PM

Sometimes I go for a little walk. Lately, I’ve been trying to notice how the plants and trees are changing through the seasons and work on identifying them. For instance, this week I noticed that all of the Honeysuckle is gone and has been replaced by bunches and bunches of Queen Anne’s Lace. I guess it’s technically a weed, but I’ve always been a fan.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.45.05 PM

Did you know that Queen Anne’s Lace is also called a wild carrot? I pulled one up to look at the root and it did indeed resemble a white carrot and it smelled like one too.

Did you also know that there are a few tiny purple blossoms on each flower? They almost look like a squished bug in this picture.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.47.41 PM

Those purple blossoms are one way to tell the difference between Queen Anne’s Lace and Hemlock (which is poisonous!). The other is that Queen Anne’s Lace has hairy stems. See the things you can learn by taking a lunchtime walk?

Last night, I went to my first ever stitching group meeting! The ladies were so welcoming and I really enjoyed it.

We learned some specialty stitches and worked on Christmas ornaments. Here’s where I got with mine.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.52.22 PM

I tried to use nontraditional Christmas colors. We are supposed to complete stitching by the next meeting so that we can work on finishing techniques. So fun! I think I will enjoy being a part of this group.

Ship Shape.

Hi Blog! We are back from our vacation, and what a vacation it was!

I was nervous about going on a cruise, but OH MAN(!), we had fun! The 8 days positively flew by.

The highlights were:

Screen Shot 2014-07-16 at 12.10.48 PM

This is my 201st post! It’s hard to believe that I’ve blabbered on here over 200 times. Thanks for hanging out with me!

The beach was really fun. The good camera stayed packed, so here are some iPhone pics from our trip.

I got in some quality stitching time on the porch (seen here with the necessary Wawa coffee).

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 8.39.51 AM

One night, I left my stitching supplies outside and when I looked for them in the morning, they were gone! The wind had blown everything away! Luckily, the threads were organized in separate little baggies. I was able to recover all but 2 of the baggies. 🙂 but also :(.

Here’s what the project looked like at the end of the weekend.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 8.44.30 AM

I actually thought that I was almost finished, but then realized that I was reading the chart wrong and still have another row of stars and ravens to do. That’s great because I love stitching these stars, but sucks because I have to go buy more thread.

By the way, did you know that crows and ravens aren’t the same thing? I always thought that they were, but Tom looked it up on the Internets, and they are apparently different creatures! Although after learning the differences, we still can’t really tell them apart.

Back to the weekend…

We mostly lazed around, especially the dogs. They are experts at lazing around.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 8.48.16 AM

We went fishing, but didn’t catch anything, except for one tiny crab that got away.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 9.01.09 AM

We got our first boardwalk fries of the year. They were hot and crispy and delicious.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 9.02.08 AM

One night, we went to the beach after dark. The boys played in the sand…

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 8.54.32 AM

And took over the lifeguard stand.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 8.53.28 AM

I love looking at the boardwalk all lit up. The purple ferris wheel on the right is the one that I like to go on (even though I’m afraid of heights).

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 8.59.30 AM

We tried to take some pictures.
