Spring Breakin’

tap… tap… tap…  Is this thing on?

Hi strangers! It has been awhile! How are you?

Spring Break has come and gone. The weather was warm and glorious. I like to take walks and pick up weird specimens to draw. This is from a “Princess Tree”. Thanks Internets for the ID!

Check out this cool branch formation. Nature is so symmetrical!

I thought I had hit the thrift store jackpot on a Q-snap frame. Too bad I didn’t read the package carefully because… hello

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.21.14 PM.png

It is the size of a table! And made for quilts! Ugh.

Littlest sculpted this. I think the resemblance is uncanny.

Look at these cute rolls I made!

Tom tried to walk Charlie on a leash.

They didn’t make it very far.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.30.00 PM

I stitched a little. Le sigh. Same ol’ skirt.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.31.10 PM.png

Littlest wanted to stitch too, which made me insanely happy.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.31.53 PM.png

Cute… Cuter… Cutest!

We built a volcano.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.35.33 PM

Because what else do you do when you’re bored and want to make a giant mess?

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.41.00 PM.png

But it wasn’t all fun and games around here. We tried to instill a good work ethic in the boys by offering them money to clean up sticks in the yard.

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 3.38.31 PM

That lasted about 20 minutes until I looked out the window and saw them doing this instead.

That about catches you up. Happy Spring!

Breaking Bread

Hello Blog!

I went to the library during lunch last week and got a book on baking bread.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.42.43 PM.png

Of course, that meant there was bread baking this weekend. The results were ok. I don’t know what the problem is, but my bread always seems just “ok”, never “stellar.” You know how sometimes you eat a piece of bread and there’s not even butter or anything on it, but it still tastes so amazing and delicious? Crispy on the outside but soft and a little chewy on the inside and just the right ratio of crust to center? That isn’t my bread. Does anyone have tips, or better yet, a secret family recipe to share? Sigh… dreams.

I was cleaning on Saturday and came across my little loom from the weaving class that Stephanie and I took. I had no choice but to weave a few lines before putting it away. I just played around with trying to keep the lines even. It needs work.

Littlest is starting roller hockey this week. It’s his first year, so in addition to learning the rules of hockey, he also has to learn how to roller blade! I am pretty impressed with how fast he got the hang of it.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.35.37 PM.png

Yesterday, he asked me if I could practice with him, so I unearthed my dusty roller blades from the garage and strapped them on for the first time in 15 (gasp!) years. I’m not sure what I’m doing in this picture, but the smile is masking the terror I feel inside.

Tom and I are watching the final season of Mad Men on Netflix (I know, we are hopelessly years behind on current pop culture). Binge watching a season means lots of cross stitching time.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 2.38.16 PM.png

I finally finished the black part on creepy lady’s skirt. Wheeee! I’m on fire!

Happy Monday! Did you have a fun weekend?

A Simple Home

Hi Blog!

Where did this week go? Last night we had crazy thunderstorms. Thunder is kinda cool, but it keeps me up, which is not cool. Insomnia = baking.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.20.12 AM.png

Stephanie and I went to an antique place last weekend. I got this.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.18.30 AM.png

At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, but the sales ladies were staring me down as I was making my decision and it was only $14, which is something a bargain shopper like me could not resist. It’s growing on me now, but I feel like I am walking that fine line between decorating my house with “vintage character” and decorating my house “like a granny.”

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.28.16 AM.png

I also made a second batch of deodorant bars. So far, they are working really well. The true test will be when Summer comes. They will have their job cut out for them.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.21.39 AM.png

The other night, during a different bout of insomnia (do I sense a theme?), I wrote down all of the things that we have been doing towards our goal of living more simply and naturally. It included fun stuff like making our own deodorant and soap and cleaning supplies and basic but useful stuff like recycling old tshirts into rags and using cloth napkins. I felt really proud once I realized how many of these things have become part of our daily routines.

Speaking of daily routines, Sammy has found a new favorite napping spot… the hamper. He seems to prefer it when it is filled with the smelliest boy socks.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.26.05 AM.png

And then there’s Charlie. This is his favorite place these days, sitting and watching the birds flutter by. I think he’s as excited about Spring returning as I am.

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.29.46 AM.png

And as for me, I’ve been sketching…

And stitching. I finally tackled frogging and re-stitching the ghoulish lady.
Remember all that fuss over her skin?

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 9.37.35 AM.png

So that about sums up the latest around here. What’s new in your world?
