Stitch Therapy

Discovering me … one stitch at a time

A Simple Home

Hi Blog!

Where did this week go? Last night we had crazy thunderstorms. Thunder is kinda cool, but it keeps me up, which is not cool. Insomnia = baking.

Stephanie and I went to an antique place last weekend. I got this.

At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, but the sales ladies were staring me down as I was making my decision and it was only $14, which is something a bargain shopper like me could not resist. It’s growing on me now, but I feel like I am walking that fine line between decorating my house with “vintage character” and decorating my house “like a granny.”

I also made a second batch of deodorant bars. So far, they are working really well. The true test will be when Summer comes. They will have their job cut out for them.

The other night, during a different bout of insomnia (do I sense a theme?), I wrote down all of the things that we have been doing towards our goal of living more simply and naturally. It included fun stuff like making our own deodorant and soap and cleaning supplies and basic but useful stuff like recycling old tshirts into rags and using cloth napkins. I felt really proud once I realized how many of these things have become part of our daily routines.

Speaking of daily routines, Sammy has found a new favorite napping spot… the hamper. He seems to prefer it when it is filled with the smelliest boy socks.

And then there’s Charlie. This is his favorite place these days, sitting and watching the birds flutter by. I think he’s as excited about Spring returning as I am.

And as for me, I’ve been sketching…

And stitching. I finally tackled frogging and re-stitching the ghoulish lady.
Remember all that fuss over her skin?

So that about sums up the latest around here. What’s new in your world?

Almost there…

Around here

  1. I wondered why I was not getting your blog post updates…For some reason I was not following you anymore πŸ™ Not sure how that happened. Your muffins look so delicious! I would love one about right now πŸ™‚ The sewing basket is awesome!! LOVE it! And I think decorating should be about whatever you want. I like so many different styles, it’s hard to stick to just one thing. So I have modge podge everything πŸ˜‰ But I am surrounded by what I like and I think your basket is a great addition. You sketch beautifully! I can see them on the front of a card or made into a stamp or cross stitched. Your stitching is looking so nice. I do remember the skin dilemma…have you changed your mind again? I like the pinker tone.

  2. I love what you bought and where you placed it in your home. I had no idea what it was, but the lines are gorgeous. This would probably cost $140 over here, or even more.

I also love the pink skin tone in your stitched lady.

I have tried natural deodorants and man, was I stinky!

Your drawings are wonderful. I can see them on tiles.

  3. I loooove the sewing box. I’m still kind of (no, I am) filthy that my elder cousin got Gran’s mother’s sewing box as I’m the only one that sews!

  4. Oh no! Well, I’m glad that you’re back! πŸ™‚

My house is a total modge podge too. I don’t like when houses look too perfect anyway! πŸ˜‰

Thank you so much! I am thinking about trying to make a cross stitch pattern from a sketch. We’ll see. I am changing her skin to the pinkish color.

  5. It’s an old sewing box. I was just looking at them on ebay last week and totally random that I should run into one while out and about. They sell for a lot here too, so it was just dumb luck.

Oh no on the deodorants! I feel so rusty with my drawing but thanks for the support!

Hope that you are having a good trip!

  6. That’s not fair at all!!! πŸ™

  7. carolinehauf

It’s definitely more vintage charm than granny chic and I want one too!! Muffins look yummy, but I am sorry to hear about the insomnia – been there, and it really stinks. Simplifying and using natural over processed, making do – all things after my own heart. Happy almost weekend, Fawn.

  8. Thanks! Happy almost weekend to you too. We’re in the home stretch!!!

  9. Can’t wait to see what you design! I think you will like the pink face much better πŸ™‚

  10. i’ve been meaning to ask you how you get your cloth napkins clean. is a normal cycle in the washing machine enough? i’m thinking of how to get lipstick, red wine, bbq sauce, etc. out. i would choose darker colors but still want to make sure they get clean. oh, and do you have to iron them after the wash? did you make your own or buy them? i’d like to make some for special occasions. they seem a lot of work for daily use.

  11. For daily use, I have napkins with print designs so you don’t really notice the stains that much. The kids are messy!

I have nicer white ones that I use for guests. They do get a lot of stuff on them, but with white, I can just use bleach if there’s something that doesn’t come out in the regular wash. I do put some detergent on stains and let them sit before throwing them in the wash.

I do iron them. It’s strangely relaxing because they are small and flat and don’t require any thought. I feel very satisfied when there is a stack of crisply ironed napkins.

I love to hear from you!
